In Windows XP Professional, when insering a CD Rom in the drive, I
used to get an overview of the actions that could be taken. Now I
don't. How do I turn it back on?

Roger.

Right-click on the drive in My Computer.
Choose properties, then edit the AutoPlay tab.

I had already tried that, I set everything to "prompt me each time to
choose an action", then clicked "apply" and "OK". I'm not being
prompted.

The feature you are looking for is "auto insert notify" which interacts
with the "autoplay" but is not the same. Not sure just how to turn it
back on (have not finished snooping out a problem I found with
my system and CD's that have the same label. Seems XP can't tell
they were changed unless I put a different disk in and let it see it
first).
Do a google search on the auto insert/notify and you will find info
on how to work with it. Seems to me TweakUI is one that can
set it.

Tried for "auto insert notification" with Google, but no luck, the
suggestions there don't seem to work with Win XP. I'll start a new
thread on it.
Thanks for pointing me to the probable cause.
Roger.
