no programs buttons on the taskbar

i have got this problem with the taskbar that there is no
buttons that show the opened programs on it... all i have
are toolbars... removing the toolbars does not seems to
solve the problem either... worse, removing the quick
launch toolbar or all the toolbars will cause the whole
taskbar to disappear, not hide but gone for good... the
task bar seems to have shared the whole length among the
toolbars... i can't resize the toolbars to make them
smaller or larger... can someone help me out here...
