No Power Schemes

I have XP Home SP2 installed. In the Control panel/Power options there
are no power schemes and no way to create and save one. Now after
installing APC's UPS software the machine trys to go into Stanby after
a short time of no keyboard activity. I have checked the Bios settings
and turned off all power management there, any idea on how to solve this
pain in the A problem....

You have to suspect APC's software, either in its settings, or some conflict
of drivers. I would look at the Event Viewer, first, then Device Manager for
conflicts. Also run MSINFO32 for conflict info.

look in the registry, there should be 6 keys (named "0" to "5") under this
one:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\PowerCfg\PowerPolicies

Any additional numbers are "extras" added by the user or some other source
(ie, the first 6 are the default entries included w/ xp).

If your machine is F*U'd then you can replace these keys from a friends
machine by exporting "...\PowerConfig" from their machine and importing
it to yours. Note that "...\PowerConfig\CurrentPowerPolicy" defines which
number is current; if it is "out-of-range" you can fix that just be
setting it to 0, then reopen control panel and pick which other you'd
like. Perhaps that's all you'll need to do to fix your situation.

I have personally seen this reg area get messed up simply by playing
around w/ defining my own power configs via the control panel; restoring
the reg by hand fixed the problem.

FWIW, about 1 month ago I posted the full .reg file for this entry, but
due to cut/paste issues it was a bit of a mess and I didn't repost it
here. If interested google for it (in google GROUPS; seach for
"PowerConfig", it's in there!) Good luck.
