No ping with XP Home

Two XP Home computers connected with direct cable (crossover). Both in
mshome workgroup and guest acounts on but no connection. Both firewalls are
turned off. Both have SP1. Pinging other computer times out. (Pinging
computer's own IP times out, too. Odd) Changed Ip's to 10.0.0.10 and
10.0.0.11 with subnet 255.255.255.0. Still no ping. Added nwlink protocol
on both computers and now they connect. Shares and printers can be accessed,
so wiring and cards are good. IPconfig looks normal on both. Any
suggestions on how to get tcp/ip to work on XP Home?

When a computer can't ping itself, the problem is usually caused by a
firewall program. Don't just turn off the firewall. Un-install the
firewall, using the un-install procedure provided by the manufacturer.
Then try ping and TCP/IP access again.

Another possibility is a corrupted TCP/IP stack, especially if you've
recently removed any spyware. Download this program (on another
computer, if necessary) and run it:

I'll try the winsock fix when I get back to the office. But we haven't had
any problems with spyware and haven't removed any. I don't know of an
uninstall program for XP's firewall. I thought it is built in. How do I
uninstall it? Microsoft is the manufacturer. Also, both computers have the
same problem (can't ping even its self) or the other machine.

I've never heard of XP's firewall preventing a computer from pinging
itself, so I assumed that you've installed a third-party firewall:
ZoneAlarm, Norton Internet Security, Trend Micro PC-cillin, etc. It
isn't possible to un-install XP's firewall.

Are you sure that you're pinging the right IP addresses? Can the
computers ping themselves using their computer names instead of IP
addresses?

Have you disabled any system services? That could cause problems.
