No modems will install

The messages I get. Windows was unable to install the
modem An error occurred during the instalation of the
device. The specified service does not exist as an
installed service. The drivers for this device are not
installed code 28 . Click reinstall . Then reinstall
gives me the same answer as above. I was trying even in a
safe mode and failed. Even on windows update it trys to
update the driver and fails. Right now I am trying to
install the original lucent win modem, but have tried a
new creative di-3631 and a best data fax modem all pci
modems none will install. There is a "Generic SoftK56
Data Fax" driver that is in the add or remove program
list that will NOT REMOVE! How do you remove a
unremoveable driver? I really think it an XP problem how
do I fix this without reinstalling XP. I have a Sony Viao
and they didn't give me a real XP disk just the complete
idiot disk and we are almost on XP sp2 and "oem
slipstreaming " seams way to complicated.

Have you tried a system restore to an earlier time before messing with the
modems.
If not try identifying the drivers of the generic data fax by going into
device manager which lists the drivers. Manually go in and move the drivers
to a new folder and then try reinstalling the modem.

System restore would not work ether, so I ran a dos
prompt command that I found on the internet that said it
would "fix" system restore and It may have but it deleted
all my previous restore points, so that won't work.
The "Generic SoftK56 Data Fax" driver that is in the add
or remove program list that will NOT REMOVE! Always
installs when I put "any" modem in the machine. But is
still in add remove programs and won't delete How do you
remove a unremoveable driver? This driver is apparently a
poorly written Conxction driver that has my system all
messed up. Where can I go to identify that driver, delete
it manually, and restore my XP modem software.
