G

Guest

i was working on an english paper, and i copy and pasted something into a
blank document, and the menu bar disappeared. ive tried opening a new
document and other stuff. all that shows is the side scroll bar, and the top
and left rulers. heres an example...

if anyone knows how to resolve this it would be greatly appreciated.. the
paper is due thursday, so a quick response would be nice :)

You can try deleting your Normal.dotm and Normal.dot file (or renaming
them to something else).
ONLY if that doesn't help, try the following:
1. Close Word and Outlook
2. Start / Run and type regedit
3. Navigate to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\Data
4. Rename this key
5. Navigate to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\Options
6. Rename this key
7. Restart Word

Ok.
The two files are in %appdata%\Microsoft\Templates (type that into
Start, Run)
Make sure to first close Outlook & Word and then you can move them to
the desktop e.g. (and later delete them).
Let me know if that works.

Ok...then we are down to the registry steps.
See
http://www.helpdesk.umd.edu/topics/troubleshooting/os/windows_2000/555/
for a pretty good general intro on how to use regedit
Here are the precise steps again that you have to follow:

1. Close Word and Outlook
2. Start / Run and type regedit
3. Navigate to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\Data
4. Rename this key
5. Navigate to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\Options
6. Rename this key
7. Restart Word

Close Word. Right-click on the Windows Task Bar and choose Task Manager. In
the Processes tab, see if winword.exe is listed. If it is, click on it, then
click on End Process. If there are additional instances of winword.exe
running, then end them as well.

Holding down the Ctrl key, start Word, and say Yes to starting in safe mode.

Does Word open normally now? If so, then close Word and try opening without
starting in safe mode. Is it still fixed?

If it's not still fixed, then try renaming any normal.dot and normal.dotm
files. They are located in the Trusted Templates folder. In Windows XP, this
usually will be in Documents and Settings\[user]\Application
Data\Microsoft\Templates. These files sometimes are hidden, and cannot be
deleted it Word is open. So, you'll need to set Windows Explorer to display
hidden files (Tools - Folder Options - View).

If you're using Vista, things a bit different... post back, and different
instructions will be forthcoming.

I'm guessing you accidentally pressed Alt+V instead of Ctrl+V and then
pressed U - whatever, you are in Full Screen View mode. To clear it just
press ESCape.

It appears you have not noticed my reply to your original post which appears
lower down the thread (probably - depending on how and what you are
viewing). You have no error so no need to try to fix or work round one.
