I dis-installed XP service pack two because I had NO sounds on start up and
var ious sounds were missing like when there is a fault. I then reinstalled
my windows xp 1 from my disk. NOW I dont have sounds and DONT have Windows
Media Player either.(( IT was working fine before I reloaded windows xp1) !!
I have disinstalled the Media Player from the windows accesssories box and
reinstalled -Still nothing worked SO I tried to install Media Player 10. Ok
it installed but I get a message saying "" internal application error"" SO
I try to remove the programe and I cant. IT WONT Let me - I have tried so may
times to roll back or disinstall and it keeps saying that there are
programmes relying on it!
I just tried again loading the complete media10 from the start/run box and
still no joy.
I have NO sound at all on my system sounds, but I can get sounds from voice
or audio on messenger. I have had problems with sound for ages can any body
help me- I have checked the rgistry to see if all the associated sounds like
dingwav. are there and they are all intact. I need some real help with this
one -If I can get Media player back would be a good start, then at least I
can then go forward to retreiving my sounds for the startup/shutdown etc.

Sounds (sorry for the pun) like you've got a sound chip driver problem.
Look at Device Manager, see if there's anything marked as "problem" - if so,
resolve it (uninstall/reinstall driver for the faulty device)..
Can you play audio CD's? If so, do you have direct wire from the CD player
to the sound card/motherboard, or is it playing via software? (the "direct
wire" is a THIRD cable - very thin - the essential two are the power and the
multi-pin connector - some pc's have the audio cable as well (it's not
essential).....if it's not there, than the CD player is working through
software (which is good)..

Have you checked your Sound (volume control) icon in System Tray - is there
a "mute" box tiocked? (if so, untick it).

"Sound" problems can be a right pig to sort out. Have you tried the Wizard?
(Control panel/Sounds and Audio devices/Hardware (the "troubleshoot" tab at
the bottom?)

In the absence of more expert help than mine (and I've worked my way through
similar problems several times, different pc's) I hope these things might
help. However, I've never known SP2 be the cause of the problem, nor have I
ever uninstalled SP2 (nor would I). Recommend you put it back, together
with the later updates.

That's another thought - have you checked the Windows update site for driver
updates? That's a user-select item, not an automatic download, so, worth
checking out.

NO I dont thinkits that, I have checked Device manager so many times and
there is no conflict with any sound codecs or devices , I have checked all
the propertys of drivers etc, all enabled and working-I DID have Media Player
and audi/visual on it before I disinstalled XP service2, I did that to see if
there was any registry files missing and thought that by reinstalling XP that
it might get them back! Im pretty sure this is an application problem, but I
havent a clue where to start. NOw I Can play music via Real Player NO problem
or with quiktime, so I Know its a windows problem. there are some files
missing Im pretty sure- I had a virus a while ago-all cleaned up now.

There's 2 key (critical) details in your posts
1/ You uninstalled SP2
2/ You actually had a virus (get/install AVG - it's good, and, FREE with
almost daily updates).

Uninstalling SP2 allegedly restores the original windows settings, but, it's
a MASSIVE change to the OS - it may have restored the original settings,
but, what about the installation/changes made AFTER installation of SP2 ? so
entirely possible that registry "settings" corruptions may have occurred due
to that.
Virus - may also have caused registry settings damage before eradication.

If you have the time and patience -
First, do a complete and thorough overhaul of the pc "as is". Get a couple
of utilities -
1/ PCBUGDOCTOR - that will find/fix all existing registry problems (try
before you buy - if it reports less than 300 errors I'll be gob-smacked!)
2/ TuneUp Utilities 2006 - run all the routines (superb, it is! the previous
TuneUp Utilities 2004 was just as good, might be available, cheaper)
3/ run an EXTERNAL virus check on the web
4/ download/install MS Antispyware ...

Having done all this, run a defrag, then you should have a reasonably clean
pc.
Next - connect to www.pcpitstop.com, run the full tests - see what they
say - and take any offers to "fix" errors (it's free test and "fixes")
If you STILL have problems - only real course of action is to do either a
"clean" or a "repair" install of XP (plus, SP2 and all the updates).
Personally, I'd prefer the "clean" but don't forget to back up all your
personal/music files, first!
It's a long job - you might save some time making/using a "slipdisk"
combining XP and SP2 before installation - it's well worth the effort in
"system restore" time saving - saves at least 2 hours if not more..

Summary - it's not XP, SP2 or Media Player that's the problem, nor is it the
hardware. It's the combination of changes/alterations made to the system
either by the virus or by user changes (you've already established it isn't
hardware).
So, the solution is to get the OS back to optimum for your pc - the
"clean-up" routines above will rid the existing system of all superfluous
crap and conflicts in the existing registry, but if the registry is already
missing "key" entries, they cannot correct that, only a full or "repair"
installation can.

Good Luck! Post back your results...there's a minimum estimated 12 hours
work here!
