no mail icon in control panel

Anyone -

I'm desperate for help (after spending 3 hours 41 minutes straight on the
phone with someone from microsoft support and no results). I'm using vista
ultimate and office 2003 pro.

Apparently in Vista, there is supposed to be a mail icon in the control
panel. However, there wasn't one in mine so the microsoft support guy tried
to get it to reappear. I eventually gave up and did a complete system
recovery yesterday, but there is still no mail icon.

Can somebody please tell me where the mail icon should be and what it is
for? Also, I would really appreciate any suggestions about how to get it to
appear or find it.

Thanks for your time.

I suspect that the suport person you talked to was looking to
access the Profiles section of the Mail applet since it is not
available from within Outlook. Sorry, I don't know of an easy
way to access Profiles.

This doesn't appear to be a Windows Vista or Windows Mail
problem. For that reason I suggest, if you haven't done so
already, you post this question to an Office or Outlook
newsgroup. You might want to include details on what prompted
your call to Microsoft's support.

Have you tried running the "Detect and Repair" feature
available under Help in any of your Office programs? How about
uninstalling and reinstalling Office?

It's been my experience that the Mail icon will only appear in
Control Panel if you have Outlook installed on your system . If
Outlook is your default email program, the Mail applet can be
launched by right clicking the Email entry at the top of your
Start menu and selecting Properties from the menu that pops
out.

If you've launched Outlook at least once, it will look similar
to this;

Mail Setup

The Mail applet can be used to change three Outlook settings.
Two of these settings are available from within Outlook . The
first is for E-mail accounts which is available under the
Outlook Tools menu. The second is for Data Files which is
available in Outlook under Tools -> Options -> Mail Setup ->
Data Files. The third is for Profiles. The only way I've found
to access this setting is through the Mail applet. It should
look similar to this;

Mail Profiles

You say you're using Office 2003. Look for the following file,
substituting the correct drive letter for X;

X:\Program Files\Common Files\System\MSMAPI\1033\MLCFG32.CPL

If you right click on this file you should be presented with an
option to "Open with Control Panel".

You can also launch the applet from the Run box (Windows + R
keys). Enter the following in the Open box once again
substituting the correct drive letter for X.

"X:\Windows\system32\rundll32.exe"
X:\Windows\system32\shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL
"X:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\SYSTEM\MSMAPI\1033\MLCFG32.CPL",@0

Good luck

Thanks for the great advice. The file you had me look for wasn't there.
After another 1.5 hours on the phone with Microsoft today, the support guy
finally asked me if my machine was 64 bit. It is. Therefore, the mail icon
and file are in a different place in the control panel. I'm new to 64 bit
computing so I had no idea. Anyway, the problem is solved after a clean
install, and the mystery of the mail icon is resolved as well.

Thanks again for your time.
