No Internet Connection

It looks like this No Internet Connection problem started on 12/10/05. At
least, that is the most recent successful update MSAS displays on my PC.
After two days of receiving the NO INTERNET CONNECTION errormessage, I
upgraded to the most recent [Beta 1] version of MSAS available [1.0.701]
which included [or retained] Spyware Definition Version: 5779. The program
"Run Scan Now" window still shows:

"Spyware definitions up to date. Last updated on December 10, 2005 at
1:16:05 PM."

I again attempted to update again, both with all other "blocking/scanning"
programs enabled, and disabled. The result was the same in that I received
the "Warning, could not connect to the internet! Updates have failed.
Autoupdater could not detect an Internet Connection."

The DIAGNOSTICS scan [below] does NOT show any values for any of the 5
updater fields:
Definitions Update Date:
AutoUpdater Enabled:
AutoUpdater AutoApply Enabled:
Software Update Check Date:
AutoUpdater Software Enabled:

Of course, this could indicate that the definitions are actually up to date
and that the incorrect reply message is being returned by MSAS. It could be
selecting the "No Internet Detected" when it is actually attempting to select
a "No Updates Available, Your Files are Current" message.

I have selected an autoupdater scedule, but the values are never retained by
MSAS. I assume that is a Beta1 design.

Hi Ken;
Are you clicking Update Schedule on the schedule page after you set your scan
schedule to get it to remember the settings?

These are the latest signature definitions, all values must show this (in
diagnostics) to be current:
Spyware Definition Version: 5783
Definitions Increment Version: 136/136
Definitions ThreatAuditThreatData: 1336987
Definitions ThreatAuditScanData: 2926798
Definitions DeterminationData: 741202

Your diagnostics show that your definitions are not current. However, Ms
servers are apparently having some problems over the weekend. I suggest you
wait until Monday to re-update to see if the servers come back, although there
is a completly manual download/apply/update proceedure if you (or anyone else
that really needs immediate updates) wish.

Follow these steps:

Right click on MSAS icon within systray and choose Shutdown.

Go to these sites:

http://download.spynet.com/ASDefinitions/gcDeterminationData.gcd

http://download.spynet.com/ASDefinitions/gcThreatAuditScanData.gcd

http://download.spynet.com/ASDefinitions/gcThreatAuditThreatData.gcd

Save and overwrite if necessary these files to C:\Program files\Microsoft
Antispyware (or your favorite MSAS foldername)

Restart MSAS

My Spyware Definition Version shows 5783 which I assume is newer than 5779.
However, I am also receiving the "Warning, no internet connection" as well. I
also see that the Beta 1 version is expiring at the end of the month. I
suspect we will shortly see Microsoft begin marketing spyware as a commercial
product which will no longer be free - thus they have stopped updating. Am I
being cynical - possibly but why would Microsoft ever continue to provide a
product like this for free?

Get out your wet-noodle and prepare for a lashing ...

From Antispyware Home Page...

Q. How much does the beta of Windows AntiSpyware cost? How much will the
final release cost?
A. Windows AntiSpyware (Beta), subsequent beta versions, and the final
release version will each be available at no additional charge for currently
licensed Windows customers. Customers will be required to validate that their
version of Windows is genuine. Get more information about the Windows Genuine
Advantage program.

The latest beta refresh, build 1.0.701, extends the Windows AntiSpyware beta
expiration date to July 31, 2006 and provides new signature updates to help
protect against recently identified spyware.

Existing users of the beta (Build 1.0.615) will receive a software update
that includes the new beta refresh. The latest beta refresh is also available
for download through this site.

Microsoft would like to encourage all Windows AntiSpyware (beta) users to
download and install the new update (Build 1.0.701).

The user must be an administrator to install this application. To check the
version number, click About Microsoft AntiSpyware… on the Help menu.

You have the current version.

There is a server problem.
I

Yes, you are being very cynical. Microsoft has repeatedly said it will be a
free product. As for their rational, I suspect it has to do with support
cost for themselves, the major vendors, and corporations. Microsoft is
making a major investment in security.
