No icons

I have windows Vista on my laptop. I didn't like Windows Defender running
so I typed "msconfig" and unchecked that block. When the computer
restarted it kept telling me it can't find Windows Explorer so I shut down
the computer completely. When I turned it back on I have not icons, no
task bar. All that comes up is my wallpaper. I can't even do a
restore. Please help! With no icons and no task bar I can't go
anywhere. Also, can I shut it down and put the Vista CD in and start it
up again. Thanks.

Karen,
Press CTRL/ALT/DELETE buttons at the same time. When the new window opens
select Task manager. When that window opens select File/New task. In the
following window type "explorer.exe". That should give you back your normal
desktop. Then go back to msconfig and recheck what you unchecked. Me
thinks you unchecked explorer. Also, unless you have another program that
protects you from malicious garbage, let Defender run. It has a real small
footprint.
