No DVD/CD Drive

My computer has stopped recognizing my DVD/CD-ROM drive. The bios finds th
drive OK, the Windows XP professional version finds the drive OK when i
does a hardware scan. It then says it had a problem installing the hardware
The Device Manager under System shows the correct identity of the drive, bu
shows a problem. When I open the properties widow, under the general tab i
shows
***************************************************************************
******
Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but canno
find the hardware device. (Code 41

Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device
I did that but still doesn't work.
Please help

Update the drivers. Follow instructions on wizard for this
task. Not fun. You might have to get better CD hardware
from the store if the manufacturer's web site does not
have updated drivers. Besides; XP should have a good
driver for this device. So a new one might work best for
you. I've had the same experience. This is what worked for
me. -Mark

Check out the extensive CD info at Kelly's link, below - under "C".

Goto http://aumha.org/win5/a/xpcd.php#problems
See the second "problem" (read the caveats)
Run the provided registry patch

That should fix your problem (basically, a filter driver is missing or
non-operational, the registry patch will delete the filter drivers
references for your cdrom(s))

Basically, the reg file from above carries out the steps displayed at this
website

CD-ROM Drive or DVD-ROM Drive Missing After You Install Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;320553

CD-ROM Access Is Missing and Messages Cite Error Code 31, Code 32, Code 19,
or Code 39 After You Remove Easy CD Creator in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;314060

(It'll fix code 41 errors too as per the contents of the last kb article)

You had some software probably CD Burning stuff, that has gone AWOL,
leaving unsatisfied entries in the registry. To tidy up, get a registry
patch file, cdgone.reg, from www.aumha.org/downloads/cdgone.zip, extract
it, r-click on it and merge it into the registry

You will then need to reinstall any burning software that you *do* use.
