No display

Hi

I've inherited a Advent 3408A PC

http://www.uktsupport.co.uk/advent/pc/3408a.htm

Everything sounds as though it is powering up ok. There is also a red light
on the motherboard. I can see the fans working too.
The monitor is definitely in working order as I have tested it on another
machine. The green light is on but the display just says 'Attention No
signal Input'
I've removed and reseated the memory. I even tried booting it with just one
memory stick (there are 2 and I tried with each of them) in case this was
the problem. I've checked all other connections and removed and replaced the
battery.
There are no beeps either (would I hear this even without speakers in?)
Apparently, before this problem began, the pc wouldn't boot up. There was
an error message on a blue screen but the person who gave me the pc can't
remember what it was, although they are thinking there may have been a hard
drive problem.

Any suggestions would be brilliant.

Thanks in advance

try resetting the bios...
there is usually a 3 pin jumper near the cmos battery...

with power off...you move it to the "other" position for a few seconds...
then back again

Thanks,

Have just done that.....left the jumper on the new position for about 3
mins....is that enough?......still no joy when I put it back though.

any other ideas?

Cheers

try a minimal hardware cfg...
ie: unplug all cards (but video of course)
disconnect harddrive, cdrom and floppy
etc.

if that still does not work you will need to substitiute parts...
such as trying another powersupply etc

There's not much else you can do that hasn't already been suggeste
without swapping parts out. eg video card. then again it could b
the motherboard or CPU, but start by switching the card out i
possible

you said you tested the monitor on another machine. you could tr
putting the video card into this other machine and testing it tha
way

Thanks for your suggestions.
Will give them a try later and let you know how I get on

Since my last post, I've done the following:

Tested the machine using a different graphic card
Tried booting the pc with minimal cards/drives.
Removed and re-seated anything that can be removed
Cleaned the fans

Sadly nothing has worked and I still get the 'no video input' message.

Am I now looking at something bigger like replacing the motherboard?
Could the battery need replacing......is that enough to stop the graphics
working?

Again, any help greatly appreciated.....I'm on a mission now to get this
thing working!!!!

Does the computer use beep codes in the BIOS, when there is trouble ?

If you pull all the memory, the computer should complain about it
by beeping. If you hear the beeps, it means your processor works.
If you cannot get any beeps (with the computer internal speaker
connected to the motherboard), then the processor, motherboard,
or power is at fault.

You can start the machine with most of the hardware disconnected
or removed, and see if there is any useful response from it.
Add components back, until you find a component that seems to
be stopping the machine from working. That is one way to do
a bit of debugging.

Hi

If you're getting no display at all and have tested different vide
cards, the problem is (most likely) going to be with either th
motherboard or CPU; this is especially the case when there are n
error beeps
