No display until Windows ...

Hi all

PNY 6800GT with a viewsonic VA1912w via DVI connection

I've been having a number of problems with my PC recently (BSOD's,
IRQ-Not-Equal, CRC errors when installing games etc) basically somethings
seriously wrong!(

But before I start trouble shooting the above errors (e.g. running with one
stick of RAM, re-installing windows etc) I have a serious problem which has
only just started namely the PC will POST (I.E. I get a sucessful beep) but
there is no display until Windows starts. Obviously if I want to change the
BIOS settings I don't wnat to do it blind! ;o) I've tried a web search and I
can't seem to find anything specific to my problem. Please can somone
suggest a way I can troubleshoot this problem?

TIA

Hi,

I had that bootup problem once.
As far as I remember (it was a while ago), a simple bios reset (clear cmos
using jumpers) didn't do the trick.

The only solution that worked for me was to swap the videocard with an old
pci card, enter bios setup and let it reset to factory defaults.
Then remove the pci card and back to agp. Problem fixed.
I've never understood why it happened.

regards,
Marcel

I had the same problem (the blank screen until Windows) and figured out my
BFG6800Ultra was causing the problem. They sent me a new one and it worked
fine after that.

Typically the BIOS allows you to set a "Primary" display type, PCI or AGP
(or PCI-E for newer boards).
Yours is probably set to PCI. Once Windows is up, it doesn't care which is
primary at boot-time.

Two ways to fix it:
- if you've got a Windows BIOS application provided with the board, change
the setting here, no need to swap any hardware.
- install a PCI display card, change the setting to AGP in BIOS, re-install
your AGP and you're good to go.

Thanks for all the replies.

Hmmm seemed to have *fixed* it but the solution isn't that great! Namely I
opened up the case to make sure everything was seated correctly but as I put
the case back on its shelf it powered up without me touching the power
switch. Now it booted up fine (could get into the BIOS etc.) and I deleted
the VC drivers (used Driver Cleaner) in windows and installed the latest
official Nvidia ones. So far, so good no more BSOD's and can run BF2, Quake
4 etc though I still can't re-install Oblivion due to CRC errors.

However I'm wondering if perhaps I need to re-install the motherboard as
there maybe a short or something indicated by the PC powering on by just
being moved?

Probably your EDID on your monitor. I had the same issue with my Dell until
they gave me a program to correct the EDID.
