My computer went into standby today and since then I lost my monitor
display.I can turn the computer off, reboot and hear windows startup but the
screen has nothing on it. My monitor power button is flashing green.
I have a Dell desktop with Windows XP home SP2.
Glad I have a laptop on a network.

Since the monitor does not even display the BIOS messages during POST
(Power-On-Self-Test), this is a hardware problem (defective monitor,
cable, video adapter) rather than a Windows issue.

I upgraded to a 19 inch hp monitor that is widescreen.
It says optimal resolution is 1440x900 @60 hz which is what I have it set at.
I notice some web pages have wide blank margins on the side.
Is that an individual web page problem or should I adjust the screen
resolution to something else that will work with most webpages? This setting
works good for my desktop also, the old setting had all my icons stretched
out sideways.

The blank spaces are normal for a wide screen monitor. You can lower
the resolution to alleviate the situation , or learn to live with it.

live with it-thanks again.

Well, I run a 19" widescreen display with one of my systems as well and
that ratio equals 16:9 = 1.78. The "optimal" resolution 1440/900 = 1.60
and therefore, I run that display with the resolution 1280x720 instead.
1280/720 = 1.78 = 16:9 and there are no blank margins at all. Although
that resolution differs from the "optimal" resolution, it seems to match
exactly the LCD/TFT monitor's *native* resolution since the graphic
quality is simply perfect. Just try it out, provided that your video
adapter supports that mode and stick with the 60Hz refresh rate.

Anyway, I wonder how you managed to find that highly sophisticated
display within the (prehistoric) city of Bedrock. ;)
