No Audio when capturing DV AVI

G

Guest

I am also experiencing the issues regarding NO AUDIO being captured when
using MovieMaker to capture DV-AVI through Firewire from a DV camera.

If I capture using Adobe Premiere, I get perfect audio and video. If I
capture in WMM using any other setting than DV AVI, I get audio. If I
capture as DV-AVI, I get perfect video, but no audio. This seems to be the
same issue [1].

Equipment:
- Canon XM-2 (that is the Pal version of GL-2)
- HP (Compaq) nc6000 (P 1.6Ghz computer) capturing to external USB2
harddrive

I don't see the hardware being any trouble, as I have successfully captured
to much weaker hardware before (using other programs than moviemaker).

version of moviemaker: 1.12427.1 (I guess I should try an upgrade...)

Anyone know of a resolution for this issue?

I have an older slower external USB1 hard drive.... and just tested
capturing via firewire from my camcorder, selecting DV-AVI.

I set Movie Maker's temp folder to one on the external drive, and also told
MM2 to put the captured file on that drive. It captures both video and
audio. Of course playback of the DV-AVI file is pretty spotty, but I can see
and hear it.

heh :) usb 1...

but I am using a usb2 drive, and capturing does work with other software -
or with wmm as long as I don't use the dv-avi setting. I don't understand
why I am getting perfect video, but no audio....

As I am getting audio with any .wmw setting, or if I capture in Premiere.

Hi Inge!

I see you are using M1.1 -- There was an issue with some Canon camera's
where the audio would be missing in the captured file. MM1.X created Type-2
DV-AVI files, and couldn't survive a change in the audio format. IIRC, the
cameras would initialize to 12bit audio, but as most people record 16bit
audio, as soon as the graph started to record, the DV Splitter would hit the
audio format change, and lose the audio.

If you want to stick with MM1.X, the work around is to play a small bit of
your tape in the capture dialog BEFORE capturing (You can rewind after this
to manually re-que your tape to the beginning). That should correctly
initialize the graph with the audio format on the tape, and give you your
audio back.

If you upgrade to MM2.0 or higher, you shouldn't have this problem, as MM2.X
creates Type 1 DV-AVI files (which don't require the use of the DV
Splitter).

Hope this helps!

Thank you for your timely feedback. This does indeed seem to explain what I
am experiencing.

If I start playing for a couple of seconds before I begin the capture, I get
audio just fine (and yes, my footage is with 16bit audio).

My reason for sticking with MM1.1 at the moment is not a matter of choice,
but as I don't have easy access to broadband (only ISDN at the moment) I
don't see it feasible to do a download of the WinXP service pack atm. (which
seems to be the only way to get MM2).

Now, if I want to capture the first few seconds as well, you mention that I
can "..rewind after this
to manually re-que your tape to the beginning". I tried rewinding within
MM, but that seems to reset the audio settings again. Did you mean that I
can rewind with the buttons on the camera, while the tape is playing? (I
would try it, but I am currently capturing the first of the 21 tapes I had
already captured with no audio....)

Thank you again for your help :)

The key is to make sure that you see video in the preview monitor before you
begin recording. :)

Typically, cameras support what they call "play/pause" state -- You play a
little of your video, and instead of pushing the "stop" button (which stops
sending video from the tape to the to the display) you push "pause" (which
stops the playback of the tape, but continues to show a frame in the
display). Once you're in "play/pause," press and *hold down* the "frame
backward" button to rewind your tape -- that should allow you to rewind the
camera and not hit the audio format change.

Cheers!
