No Audio Installed?

One of the automatic Windows updates clobbered my buildin Audio SoundMax
device.

When I try to run any audio from Media Player 11 (updated from 10 thinking
that might help, didn't) I get a message that either the card is not
installed or someother application is using it.

When I try to run any audio using Quicktime, everything looks like it is
playing, just no sound. The speaker application will not run because it
reports no audio installed.

System boot up sounds are OK but none after bootup.

I uninstalled the SoundMax Device but XP reinstalled it upon reboot, still
didn't work.

Any help would be appreciated.

Note: I am also plagued by the boot up message from SVCHOST.exe: ". .
..instruction at 0x745f2780 referenced memory at 0x00000000..." I have
installed the windows fix for this at least 5 times but it still is a
problem.
