Please, someone give me the name of a newsreader I can purchase, a
newsreader that includes a tutorial concerning the use of the newsreader,
the meanings of all the options and menu listings and the results of the
changes I make to settings.
Yes, I am an inexperienced newsreader user, a newbie. I have used
computers for 30 years but only started using a newsreader a week ago due to
the limitations of the web interface newsgroups. The help section of WLM
tells me absolutely nothing. It is a complete waste of my time. I can't find
the answers to my questions anywhere. When I continuously post my questions
to this newsgroup it is a waste of your time also.
It irritates me to come across as being a moron and it is humiliating
to say the least. Intelligence, ingenuity and common sense are of no benefit
when using the WLM newsreader. I can read a tutorial in one hour and have
all the answers to all my questions or I can use WLM's newsreader and
continue asking questions for the next year, irritating the experienced
newsreader users. The very last thing I wish to do is irritate the other
users of these newsgroups and/or waste their valuable free time.
Again, if anyone is using a newsreader that also contains a viable
tutorial or help section please give me the name of the newsreader so I can
purchase it. I don't care how much money I must spend. I am fed up with WLM
although I like it very much.

I use Windows Mail myself. I think it's pretty nifty actually. Mozilla
Thunderbird might have better help files but I find Windows Mail to be
fairly easy to figure out when it comes to newsgroups.

I agree with Andre. Windows Mail is a very superior product. Except for the
lack of downloadable HTTP mail, (which can be replaced with Windows Live and
Messenger) I find it excellent. There is also the web interface to consider
for the extreme nubie. The email notification alone is worth it to them.

Even though I am posting from Windows Mail at the moment ( I have just been
testing it out for a few weeks) ..........I'd suggest you try a dedicated
Newsreader like Xnews. Xnews does not have a built in tutorial but there are
enough web sites you can google that cover it fairly well. It's free and
non-intrusive to your OS give it a try.

Speaking of extreme newbies ...

1) HTML formatted messages are totally frowned upon on Usenet, so don't
sweat it.

2) Being a Top Poster on Usenet is the FIRST indication that one is a total
newbie when it comes to Usenet.

I've tried most news readers and Agent is absolutely the best in my
opinion. Incidentally, you'll see on their home page that you can
also purchase their news service. Don't. There are free ones that
are just fine.

However, as stated previously, I am totally unfamiliar with newsreaders. You

I'm glad it is so easy for everyone else to figure out. I am happy for them.
This apparently validates the assumption I am some kind of moron. I guess
I'll just have to continue to be humiliated until I self-educate myself to
all the workings of a newsreader.

as opposed to Windows Live Mail, which I use. I like WLM very much. I
started using WLM for the express purpose of getting away from the web
interface discussions. However, I have never used newsreaders before. I am
just now realizing how stupid I am. It doesn't bother me that I'm a moron.
What bothers me is looking stupid to everyone who reads my posts. It is
humiliating and I don't like the feeling. What bothers me the most is that I
must waste the valuable time of others.

Thank you for the link. I appreciate it very much. However, if Xnews
does not have a tutorial I will be in the same position I find myself
currently.
I have spent days searching the web for information pertaining to the
use of newsreaders. I have used Live Search, Google, Yahoo, Ask.com, Ask
Jeeves, etc, etc, etc, with no luck at all finding answers. I have searched
for this information using every conceivable question I can imagine,
rewording the queries in dozens of ways.
I don't have problems finding articles "about" newsreaders. I don't
have any problem "finding" newsreaders. There is simply no information about
all the functions, settings, options and configurations of newsreaders,
which is the information I seek. This is why I am looking for a newsreader
with a complete, informative tutorial.

Would I need a news service with Agent? I am only concerned with being
able to access the Microsoft newsgroups. I assume there is a way to use
Microsoft's news server with Agent. If not, please advise.

Hi C.B.,

Be aware that if you use a MS mail client, it has the inherent flaw of
inserting a delimiter when using a signature, when the reply and
signature are top posted (above the quote). You can use the add-on
Quotefix, but most don't (because of ignorance or defiance). Good
newsreaders don't insert a delimiter when top posting, because a good
newsreader strips everything below a delimiter (which should only be
used when a signature is bottom posted). Top posting and using a
signature with a delimiter effectively wipes out any useful information
in a post (since the delimiter is inserted at the top of a post with MS
clients and everything below it is removed). Only MS clients insert a
delimiter on a top posted reply, and then ignore the delimiter on
replies, something that makes absolutely no sense.

I would strongly suggest Thunderbird, or Xnews or Forte.

If that's all you want you can use Microsoft's news server:
msnews.microsoft.com. That carries *only* the microsoft.public.*
groups. There are *thousands* of other groups that discuss about
anything you can imagine. Your ISP very likely provides a Usenet
server, check with them.

I assume there is a way to use Microsoft's news server with Agent.

Of course, that's how I get here. Just plug the server name I gave
above into the proper place in "Tools|Servers and Accounts" in Agent.

Yes, you do need a news service,and Microsoft offers theirs. However,
I'm not sure how large the Microsoft newsgroup listings are. My isp
has thousands of newsgroups, covering almost every possible subject
you can imagine.

Be aware that almost every newsreader easily permits using multiple
news servers (I am currently using five news servers with Agent). It
sounds like you are recommending using your ISPs server instead of
Microsoft's, but I recommend using them *both*: the Microsoft server,
msnews.microsoft.com, for the Microsoft newsgroups, and a
general-purpose server, such as one provided by your ISP, for other
groups.
