Newsgroups are now SEARCHABLE via Browser

WOW... I happened to take a look at the MSAS Beta newsgroups in the IE
browser, and would you believe it's searchable, finally. Searching in
"Anti-Spyware" searches all subcategories (announcements, appcompat,
general, etc.) for answers to your MSAS questions.

I'm delighted that the casual visitor will be able to find something in here
at last, without having to setup a newsreader or always have to ask for help
on a subject that's been answered many times already. It looks pretty good
on my initial look. So just THANKS to whomever implemented the long overdue
enhancements.

Thanks for that piece of into.

I fired up my (by now very rusty) IE6 to see what
you were on about.

I immediately got a warning message from Microsoft Anti-Spyware
saying :

" MS AntiSpyware has blocked the Int+ernet Explorer Bar
Microsoft Shell Browser UI Library (browseui.dll) from being installed"

Is this a case of MS shooting itself in the foot? Or are you talking about
something else?
How is this feature accessed?

Go to Help, support newsgroups on the web, within Microsoft Antispyware.

IE not required.

WHOA--not only are they now searchable--they've switched to the newer HTML
interface--this is a big change for the better, folks--check it out!

Yes, in can concur also. No need to setup and use OE with the news reader
anymore.

Hmmm ?

Not possible to run with Firefox or Opera.............

Time for IE7 again, Bill is MVP again as I can see ;)

I haven't had a chance to test yet with Firefox or Opera. Will do that when
I can get to some machines with those installed, remotely, tonight.

Not so. When I go into 'Help' and click on 'Support Newsgroups on the
Web...'
I get my Firefox jump to attention, with all the posts. The formatting looks
a bit
weird, but the discussion threads are there...

Hi Kes

Start IE and compare !

It´s not working for me, "message area" is missed and I cannot
click on a message, directly back to "start"......

Running Firefox 1.5 Beta 1 and Opera 8.5

OK with IE7.

The message area didn't work for me in IE6 either, at first. I reset all
the settings to defaults, and it works now. The alternative was to
double-click on a given thread or conversation--that opened it in a new
window where everything worked.

Haven't had time to dig through and spot exactly what setting had that
effect--what happened was that the message window stayed empty--it had
buttons at the bottom, but no content.

The only annoying thing is that I now have to sign in each time, aswith the
other news groups. Didn't have to do that before (I always used IE6 or other
IE based browser previously)

Well, using popups for writing is maybe also not so good ;)

A lot of users have popup blocks from another app such
as Google toolbar and don´t see that popups must be allowed.

G

It used popup for reply before. I just allowed popup from this site with my
popup blocker (not Google toolbar)

G

Well, I have no problem with this but for sure other
users with popup blockers within other programs.

Thought popups where dead after SP2 ;)

Ahh - beta on beta problem--everyone knows you can't combine two beta
products or bad things happen <G>

Let us know how it does with Beta2--I don't think I have 1.5 installed
anywhere.

I don't think it qualified as a pop-up--at least, IE6 SP2 didn't block it--I
think it is just opening a new window.

Hmm -I can't see jrosenfeld's message, except in yours, so I'm not tracking
this right. I don't know what to do with this except what jrosenfeld
did--allow popups for the site.

Hi Bill

"Made in MS"...........

Reply is a window but new posts are popup windows ;)
(With IE7 Beta 1)

And why ? Really strange programming.
