greed, avarice, maladministration, decay of manners. Familiar

Sorry for the top post, but didn't want to mess up your neat post. (G)

I am surprised that I am still able to get news groups today....the
deadline was yesterday, but I am crossing my fingers. Perhaps Ted Rogers
realized he had ticked off more customers than he thought he would.

And thanks for the info, James & Befunge.....I used to use the
Individual.net one but my only problem with it is that you can't munge
your address. I had checked into that one first. Still no munging.

Cheers.....Living on Borrowed Usenet Time....lol

Just a suggestion, get a throwaway hotmail/gmail/yahoo address
(solves the "munge" etc.)

I also used it for many years till it went to a pay one. It was a devil to
figure out how to pay for it from Canada.

However, my only beef with it is that you cannot munge your From Address.
If they changed that rule, I would use them in a heartbeat!!

there's an easy work around for that if you happen to have a gmail
account (don't know if it works on others)... supply the address
{your address}[email protected] and set up a filter to delete all
incoming email to that address (you will be able to receive email at
that address)...

another option is to try mailinator.com for disposable email (like peter
did)... dodgeit.com is a similar service... in fact there are many
disposable email services that could help... i think spamgourmet.com
allows you to setup a whitelist of who can send you email so if you
signed up with a spamgourmet email address and set it so that
individual.net was in the whitelist perhaps that would work...

Hey all.....Rogers has decided (in its infinite stupidity) to cancel Usenet
access, stating that it is passe and not many people use it. Idiots!!

I have kvetched a few times, but fully expect I will be accessing these 2
groups via Google tomorrow.

Any suggestions for a good news service that is inexpensive or free?? They
all seem to be at least $10/month and Rogers won't deduct that, of course.

Kurt....has Sympatico made any rumbles about doing the same thing? I may
just change over, but that is my least favourite solution. Ted Rogers is
such a jerk. I may just switch my cellphones over to Bell as well. Can't
do much about the TV cable service....but for $50/month, I expect to be able
to get news groups.

Thanks....Heather

Hi Heather,

Here is a post I made to ott.forsale.computing a couple of weeks ago
on this topic. It may be helpful.

Subject: Re: Rogers discontinued service

I recently signed up for a block of usenet access access with
http://usenet-news.net and it's outstanding. Cost me $6.25 ($5 USD)
for a 10GB block, which does not expire until used. I've been using it
to read/post in 4 newsgroups daily since 7-Nov-05 and have used 0.01GB
so far so that $6.25 should last me years! And speed and access have
been excellent. So, if you don't download binaries or videos, this is
as cheap as dirt. For others, their rates look pretty cheap, but I
have no idea how they compare with other providers.

BTW, if you are going to switch providers, I can highly recommend
Teksavvy. For $32.05/month including taxes, I get 3 mbps but no usenet
news, hence the above.

Happy shovelling! We got 27 cm today, I believe.

Hi Sunny.....

Using a free news server (aioe.cjb.net) and just testing it. But you are
right....I will use a throwaway account if I use the German one. I got cut
off at 2 pm today, so just trying out some of the free ones. Allegedly this
one allows me to post...we shall see.

Cheers....Heather

Wow!! I am impressed.....took mere seconds. No ACAV tho. I will still be
changing ISP's though.....this was the last straw with Rogers!!

You must have overlooked it, they do carry ACAV.

Thank you, Vito. I was so frazzled at that point, I missed it. Have it
subscribed now.

Thanks Larry.....I will keep this information and see how it goes. Spoke to
Bell re DSL this afternoon and they offered me 6 months at $25 for high
speed....then $45 thereafter. Now that I have the free news service, I can
access the 3 groups I follow, so I will take my time. Don't need binaries,
just text.

You got more snow than we did. And a neighbour's kid shovelled out our
driveway.....sweet thing!! Actually I have hired her due to Ron not being
able to do heavy stuff any more. Giggling to myself here.....I thought I
knew your name but it didn't click!! IP? Lol. I will drop you a line off
the groups.

Cheers....Heather (aka Figgs)

Don't know if this is CA-speak or US-speak. But don't forget, Gaganews,
arguably the best service around is about the same ($7.99US - $10CA)

Sorry about that. It was HF-speak, grin. The $45 Cdn is for total ISP cost
with Bell Sympatico or Rogers Cable. The news reader I am posting this with
is free. Sympatico includes Usenet.....Rogers doesn't.

When it was free, I sometimes used it, and although you can't
mung, you can use something like (e-mail address removed), and put
something more useful in the ReplyTo
