Newbie question. Agp or pci

S

Stuart

I want to upgrade my video card and I am not sure what type it is. Could
anyone out there tell me how I find out the difference between AGP and PCI.

Thanks folks

PCI = museum piece
AGP = current technology
PCI-E = the latest thing

Thus if you have the chance and are working from scratch, go PCI-E. If
you are upgrading an old AGP card then it will have to be AGP again or
get a new motherboard.

I think the point hes making is that he doesnt know what slot he *HAS*.

Below are two pictures of the 2 slots mentioned.
In the control panel>device manager you should be able to find out what type
of graphics card you current have which may give you clues.

PCI-E cards are very new. If your pc is more than a year old it's unlikely
to have a pci-e slot (however it *is* possible!)

The PCI slots that are asked about are the white ones next to the AGP slot.
There is one more thing however, the graphics card might be onboard and not
upgradable unless adding a PCI card and disabling the onboard graphics.

Do you know what motherboard you have, or what graphics card is currently in
it?

Not sure about the motherboard but the graphics card is an ATI 9200 256mb.I
have looked on the ATI site and you only get this card in AGP at 256 Mb I
have since found out. The reason I asked is that during normal use it seems
to work fine but if I use MS flight sim 2004 the monitor goes blank and
freezes just before this. I am
assuming it is the card that is at fault hence the upgrade question.

Two things come to mind. Do you have the latest drivers installed for the
9200? Or maybe Flight Sim video settings are set outside the limits of the
video card or your monitor?

I will have try and see if thats the case, although it used to be fine but I
will try that and hope that solves it.
