newbie: problems adding winxp to win2k3 server domain

Hey

I've got 2 computers, one computer with winxp pro and the other computer has
Windows Server 2003

I used to have these computers in a workgroup, but because I want to learn
how to configure Sharepoint. I then decided to create a domain and set my
windows server 2003 to be domain controller....

from the windows server computer I can ping the winxp computer. But my
PROBLEM is that I cannot ping the other way (on the winxp computer I cannot
ping the windows server)

I haven't done any modifications to Lmhosts on the winxp computer

My winXP computer has the firewall that came with sp2 enabled. But while I
only had a workgroup this firewall wasn't any problem... While using
workgroup I could from my winXP computer go into "My Network Places" and
find my workgroup and both computers in it...

I know that I must add my winXP to the domain controlled by the windows
server but before I do that I think I must solve this ping problem...

Any ideas to what I must do to solve this would be greatly appreaciated!

Did you setup your DNS on the Server?
Are both machines pointing to this DNS?
Can you ping by address?
Can you ping by name?

From the windows server I can ping the other computer using name or
ip-address

From the winxp computer I cannot ping the windows server, I tryed using
ip-adress and computer name without any luck

The wizard that set up this domain on the windows server also installed DNS
on it. When opening the dnsmgmt on the windows server computer, then I to
the left in the window I can see my windows server. but I cannot see my
winxp computer.

I guess because I cannot see the winxp computer in dnsmamgt, the winxp
computer isn't pointing to the dns...

What is the IP address, subnet mask, dns server address, and default gateway
of both computers?

From winXP computer:
Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:
Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.187
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.2

From Windows Server 2003 computer:
Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:
Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.63
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.2

dns server address is 127.0.0.1 (localhost -> the Windows Server)

I use DHCP, but my ip-adresses are always the same... and before pinging
I've verified that I'm using the correct ip-address of the other computer.
So I don't think DHCP is the problem, but I'm a newbie....

The DNS address has to be the server 192.168.1.63 on both machines not
127.0.0.1

Yes, both DNS server settings on this small LAN need to be the servers IP,
even the server, then the DNS Forwarding needs to be setup on the server
but.....that wouldn't explain why pinging the server via IP on the same
subnet does not work.

I've tryed that but it didn't help, my winxp computer lost all internet
connections so I hade to set it back to what it was before...

But I don't understand why this could fix it, because my winXP computer
cannot ping the windows server, so specifying dns server address on the
winXP to a address it cannot ping is strange to me... I thought the winXP
computer must be able to ping the windows server if this dns server address
specifyed on winXP could work

Between these 2 computers I'm using a 3com gateway/router "3Com®
OfficeConnect Cable/DSL Gateway" and after switching back to DHCP on both
computers the ipconfig /all shows (I did run ipconfig /all on both
computers) that both computers are using this router as :
Default Gateway
DHCP Server . .
DNS Servers . .

Still I cannot ping the windows server machine from my winxp computer...

Any suggestions?

After I disabled the built-in firewall on windows server 2003, i could ping
the windows server 2003 computer from my winXP computer.... but turning off
firewall isn't a good solution -> looking for way to allow request from
local network and block all other requests....

You will not be able to run a internal domain and have a firewall running on
the server at the same time.
