newbie needs help in importing audio!

After returning from a family vacation, I decided to turn
the still digital photos from the trip into a video using
MovieMaker. I would now like to add a song as background
music. I have tried using songs that I have legally
downloaded from one of the various music publishing web
sites, and I receive a response indicating that I cannot
use the song due to Digital Rights Management issues. I
then tried to import a song from a CD purchased at a
music store, and found that the song files did not have
the appropriate extensions to allow for importation. For
all you veterans out there, what am I doing wrong? How
can i add music to this video? This video is only of
interest to me and my family. It is not going to be used
for commercial purposes. Help!
