New XP Pro install - Messenger loads and then goes away!

Longashes

I performed a clean install of XP Pro over the holidays, downloaded
all security patches, updates, etc. When I tried to load Messenger,
it briefly displayed the window showing "Online" and then the window
went away. I moved my cursor of the icon on the task bar (lower right
corner) and the icon went away.

I've tried uninstalling, downloading MSN Messenger, and installing. I
can't get a version of messenger to load. Must be a parameter I'm
missing I guess. Running XP Pro SP1.

Any help would greatly be appreciated.

Greetings Rich,

You may be able to find out exact what's occurring by using the Event Viewer. To do so, run
Messenger, then have it "disappear". Then, click Start, then Run, type "eventvwr.msc" and
click OK. Click the Applications option on the side, and it should be the first or second
options (just double-click each). In the details for the error, you should get a reasonable
description of the problem, which you can reply here with.

Thanks again for your help.

I looked at the error log and here are some that I've received: (The
last log references a backup I made of the entire C drive before
reinstalling XP. Weird.) I didn't check the log immediately before
and after so I hope they are the right ones.
