New XP Install - Boot hangs at logo

Hi,

I'm trying to install Windows XP from a Windows XP Upgrade CD. This is
to a machine with a 60GB hard drive. I use a program called BootItNG to
partition the drive so the 1st partition is 5GB, and the rest is in an
Extended partition.

I installed XP to the 1st partition, providing a Windows 98SE CD when
the installation asked for it. The installation looks like it went
through completely, then at the end, it reboots the system.

The Windows XP logo screen with the green scrolling bar comes up, and it
just sits there forever.

I've run a standalone RAM test on this machine, and that came up clean.
I've also tried booting to Safe Mode, but that hangs after the line that
says "..Mup.sys". I've also tried booting in VGA only mode, but that
just hangs also.

Does anyone have any ideas what's wrong, and how I can get XP to boot?

Thanks,
Jim

It sounds like a hardware or driver compatibility problem. Did you
check the HCL to ensure all your hardware is compatible with XP?

Remove any unnecessary add in cards such as USB 2.0, ATA100, etc and
try to boot.

Foopy,

Thanks for responding. I don't think it was a hardware problem.

While waiting for possible responses, I decided to try the following:

1) Clean install Win98SE on the system, then
2) While in Win98SE, upgrade from the WinXP CD.

It was a bit of a pain, because it was a pain digging up the Win98SE
boot disk, etc., but to my surprise (and delight!), after the upgrade,
WinXP booted fine, so she's all set now.

Weird! Any idea why the XP Upgrade CD wouldn't install properly the way
that I did it before?

Thanks,
Jim

Not really. I have heard horror stories of upgrades not doing well.
You're better off doing a clean install. Did you know you can do a
clean install with an upgrade CD? When the installer doesn't find a
qualifying OS already installed it will prompt you to insert a
qualifying product cd into the cd rom. Once it verifies you are
eligible it will proceed with the install routine.

Foopy,

Per my original post, the installation method that you described below
is EXACTLY what I tried originally, which didn't boot :).
