new xp home computer starts on its own every time phone rings

This is a weird one. My parents have a brand new computer with XP home that they just got within the past month. I have gone in and checked event logs, gone into system administration properties, taken off the autorestart on event error option, checked telephone and tcp and modem settings, checked power management for no hibernation and no standby, etc.-everything that has anything to do with a computer's capacity for restarting, etc. They rarely use the internet and have the firewall activated. They typically just download e-mail and disconnect, and between this and checking for viruses, it doesn't seem to be virus-related. The computer does not shut down unexpectedly or have any errors when shutdowning, and it doesn't matter whether you use the auto xp function to shut down or whether one manually shuts it down, the computer will reboot or restart of it's own accord every time the phone rings. I.E. someone has worked on computer, shuts it down, no problems, computer stays off for say and hour and thirty-five minutes then the phone rings-suddenly without prompting or messages, the computer restarts. I've even checked the fax options, the printer/fax machine connected-no auto answer, all options off, etc., and the computer still restarts. It is the truly weirdest thing I have ever seen and no solution seems to work. Help! Thanks!

My guess the modem is set to start the computer when it detects a ring.
Many people use the computer as an answering machine (it can do some very
good things other answering machines can't). If you can find that setting
and turn it off, that should take care of it.

Sorry I don't know where all the settings are for this. I'll bet
someone here does and will let you know.

You can try looking at the modem options as well as options for any
communication program you may have.

It is also possible it is a bios setting. Do you know how to check the
BIOS setup?

Not that strange. Those settings are in the Bios. You have to go into the
bios and disable the wake on ring command.
