New Windows Longhorn articles & newsgroups

Jim Eshelman

Bill Gates and Jim Allchin unveiled much of the pre-alpha development of
Windows Longhorn, the next generation of Windows.

As a predictable result, there was a flood of new articles, from both
Microsoft and the media, on this subject. As well, MS launched a new set of
newsgroups on the subject, thogh aimedp rimarily at developers.

I've added over a dozen new items to my Longhorn information preview page,
and rearchitected the page. For those interested:

PS - As much as I would enjoy the million or so extra hits to the page, let
me save someone of you some trouble: No, there are no pirated copies of
Longhorn linked off of this page. :)

True, but there are Alpha builds that people are trying to get their hands
on.

I think i don't understand something right.
Looking at the new NGs (haven't read them yet though), would it be safe to
say that the name of the finished product would be Windows FX?
If it is, it would be really early for a final name to have been decided
upon.

For some reason, I'm interested in that one. But imagine how all the
XP-people must feel! After enduring XP-radiation induced brain ooze out
their ears all these months, they hear Longhorn is around the corner!
It's just like getting gored by a bull. Ah, ha, ha!

decided upon.

Windows FX is one of the components of the Windows version presently
code-named "Longhorn" (in the same way that Windows 95 was named "Chicago"
before its release.) If I've got it right, "WinFX" is "Windows Framework," a
new API set. (And it's easy to confuse on first pass with "WinFS" which is
"Windows File System", but they shouldn't be confused at all.)

Yea. But they all were like that. Commodore did it too, not so much with

I guess. But I think Win98 will last that long at least, functionally. I
hopscotched versions of Commodore & was sitting on an Amiga 3000 (I
think) when they went bust.
