New window won't open

In IE 6 SP1, with Q889293 installed, on W98 SE, clicking on a link that
requires a new window to open doesn't work. Explorer hangs for about 10 secs,
then just "forgets" about the click. This happens whether it's a link that
automatically opens a new window, or one explicitly asks for the link to open
in a new window, or it's a javascript open. However, it does not appear to be
specific to the configuration above, as I'm posting this from another PC
configured identically. Any thoughts appreciated.

Thanks to the respondents. I tried all the suggestions, including
reinstalling ie and running mcrepair to replace oleaut32.dll but none fixed
the prob. There are no popup blockers on this PC. Is it time to reinstall
Windows...again?

I solved it. (Solution left for anyone similarly affected.)

1. Uninstall all IE updates. (Don't really know if that's a necessary step,
but I did it.)
2. Uninstall IE. Choose "reinstate prior version".
3. Upon reboot, a popup window appears, asking something like "Would you
like the personalized settings cleaned up?" Since I have no idea what that
means, I clicked no.
4. Install IE.
5. Install IE updates. (I also installed the OE update, as it wasn't showing
up in the list of updates in Help->About.)
6. Take a deep breath; maybe it'll work for you.
