New Video Card Woes

F

Frenchy

Changed my NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti4200 card out for a Radeon 9800Pro (IceQ Excalibur).

My game crash woes don't seem to have gone away! Probably are worse. I uninstalled all old
NVIDIA stuff.

Upgraded BIOS as well (something I was resisting as it is only a year old).

Have latest ATI Drivers (or I think they are latest)

wxp-w2k-catalyst-7-962-031202m1-012924c.exe

Have struggled with this game crashes for a year now and highly frustrating.

Grabbed FRAPS to have a look at Frame rates in various games, but as I have no history, not
sure what is good?

Call of Duty - about 60
DF BHD - 90+

Halo, which I could at least play (with some crashes) with the NVIDIA card now crashes to
desktop as soon as you click CAMPAIGN, so not sure what to do here! I am half way through
as well <shit>!!

What's the spec's on your computer???? What I mean is you've tried 2 dif manufactors of video cards and still have problems. There might be something else wrong beside video card. I have a Radeon 9800 Pro 256 mb and it works great...I play CoD, MOHAA, and Halo

Yep, I am SURE there is something else wrong, now I have eliminated the video card <smile>

True! :)

Don't forget to test your RAM, and check for software conflicts.
I can post those steps for you, if you don't have them already.

Yep, done all that. But appreciate you asking :)

I can see a reformat coming up very soon and a re-start with everything clean!

Now I have to ask:

Before removing your old card, did you remove the video drivers using
add/remove programs? Then reboot so the windows default driver is
used?

Then did you shut down and remove the old and install the new card?

Then did you add the new catalyst drivers?

Then did you download the current version of the DirectX drivers?

I ask because on your system that video card and its drivers should be
rock solid.

Yep

Then I re-installed my MoBo latest drivers, even though they were on there.
Then did you download the current version of the DirectX drivers?

I already had DX 9.0b on there with all tests showing OK. I have NOT re-installed that,
should I?

Ya better believe it shud be! But I still get random drop outs from high end 3D games.
Very frustrating!

Then the next thing I'd try would be turning of the "VPU recover"
utility of the video card (but to tell you the truth, I think running
with it on is a better idea).

And fyi, using the same video card you have, I recently had difficulty
getting the first version of Max Payne to run. I had to tweak all
sorts of settings in the game's video setup before I could get it to
run.

X

-xiray-

By the way, you did download the video driver from the web right?
Because I definitely had difficulty running the CD that came in the
box.

Perhaps you should download a fresh copy.

F

Frenchy

Yep, got the latest catalyst from the Web, but did not download one from the Excalibur HIT
site (the IceQ manufacturer) as they didn't seem to list the 9800Pro in any of the drivers
there. So used ATI Radeon site.

Interesting that your other E-Mail said about tweaking to get a particular game to run. The
game save position I was in with Halo, would not load at all and neither would any earlier
game save, BUT when I started the whole freaking thing again as a new game on a new profile,
it ran fine, with only 1 drop out in about 4 hours of play.

Will try turning off the VPU recover as well, and thanks your posts and ideas.

On another note, the switch at the back of this card to run fan speed, is "down" position
high speed fan? The manual doesn't show the switch at all and if it is marked on the back
of the card by the switch, I can't read it.
