recently upgraded from 98 to xp home, computer felt brand
new-fast!
then I re-installed Norton Security 2004; know I wonder if
that was a mistake. Start up takes forever and I am
wondering if xp security package makes norton redundant?

Aaron,

No, XP won't substitute for a good AV and firewall program. However, Norton
is known to be a resource hog and slow machines down.

Personally, I use Computer Associates eTrust AV, Grisoft's AVG and Zonelabs
ZoneAlarm and they don't get in my way of using the computer.
