New thread - same problem - anyone know ANYTHING?????

This is the Error I keep getting. It starts after I've been online
a few hours. The browser then closes after the report is sent to MS.

We have the working DLL on a CD but how is it installed on X-XP home? The
system wont let us install it because we can't get rid of the old defective
dll, nor can we rename it or over write it.

If no one here knows how this is done can you recommend an URL that explains
it as we cannot find such info on the MS site.

Also if no one knows the answer HERE, why do some of you people get upset
when someone cross-posts in desperation?
Neither the Helpfiles or the XP book are of any help..........

Go to Start, then select Run
then type in: sfc /scannow

Make sure you have the Winxp CD in the CD Drive prior to
executing the command.

This will replace any missing/corrupt windows files.

Hope this helps

** Do you mean the DVD from HP? They don't give you the MS W-XP CD anymore.
Also the DLL that comes with XP "has the problem." I would just be reinstall
the BAD DLL all over again. I have a GOOD copy on another CD from another
computer.
This will replace any missing/corrupt windows files.

** The original file is corrupt as MS admits on their website - i want to
install the GOOD copy copied from another PC. How is that done when XP will
not allow the CORRUPT DLL to be over-written, renamed or deleted?

You could reinstall Internet Explorer 6.

You have cross posted to so many NGs that I've lost track of the number of times I have told you how to do this. start\run and type in regsvr32 /u mshtml.dll and then do a search for the file and delete all your copies making sure you know where each is or just rename them mshtml2.dll and then copy your new .dll from the disk to each location where the originals were. For my XP HE it's in three locations. then go regsvr32 /i mshtml.dll and hit ok or enter on your keyboard. This will reregister the new .dll. you have to be sure to put the spaces in the correct location one before and after /u and the same for /i . Good luck.

Hi

If only ~ FreeSpirit ~ had cross-posted it hadn't been so bad, but
he/she haven't. What he/she has been doing is called multi-posting,
and that is much worse. More about the difference here:

** And I said more than once that we can't delete them! XP does not allow
us to delete any DLLs.

making sure you know where each is or just rename them mshtml2.dll

** We CANNOT RENAME DLLs in WXP like you can in W98SE. I mentioned this
several times as well.

and then copy your new .dll from the disk to each location where the
originals were.

** WXP will not recognize the new DLL when moved to the windows sys32
folder. It will not allow it to move there as W98SE allows such moves.

For my XP HE it's in three locations.

** Find all Files and Folders found it in ONE location - not three.

then go regsvr32 /i mshtml.dll and hit ok or enter on your keyboard. This
will reregister the new .dll.

** It never allowed the NEW DLL to install and therefore did not register
it. How do I FORCE WXP to allow us to rename, delete or write over the old
DLL?

you have to be sure to put the spaces in the correct location one before and
after /u and the same for /i . Good luck.

** See above - our edition of WXP does not allow DLLS to be renamed, written
over or deleted.

Is there a rule or law that prevents asking the same question in several
places when no one knows the answer on the first or second NG? Or the
answer the give on group #1 doesn't apply or doesn't work for the problem?

Another thing I've noticed is some people reply without first even reading
the persons whole post. They sometimes give a reply that has nothing to do
with the problem the person is having.

See above - there is no way WXP is allowing us to rename, delete or write
over the bad DLL. This appears to be a known issue woth WXP. It refuses
to allow us to replace the bad one no matter what we tried.

A person on another NG did know of an URL with some kind of update/fix for
IE6 and so far so good. Had I only asked HERE I would still be without an
answer. Also no one seems to know how to make WXP allow us to remove the
BAD DLL so a good copy can replace it. Let me repeat: We cannot delete it,
over-write it, or rename it.

Ok, perhaps it was my fault in not describing the problem correctly.

Thanks for the reply but there is no way our version of XP-Home will allow
the new copy to install itself in the Windows/system32 folder. We do a
right click and a copy here. It will not COPY the DLL to the system32
folder. The OLD version DLL just keeps coming back. We tried deleting the
old version, moving it to the desktop, and renaming it. Nothing worked.
The same old DLL was still there.

We had no problems installing this good DLL from the CD-R onto the other HP
running W98SE. We can't even get the new copy from the CD-R to the system32
folder on this PC. Why doesn't XP allow a DLL to be replaced? Why doesn't
it allow this DLL to be copied from the CD-R to the system32 folder?

And again - all Find all Files finds is ONE copy of the bad DLL and it's in
the system32 folder.

Whewww.... I hope that explains it better. :)

Surely you can over-write a dll if you boot using the original cd and get to
a command prompt.

If not, please let me/us know.

I'm sure I can do it here but that's (of course) why I stay with Fat32 so I
can always use a DOS boot disk and access the hard disk when/if I need/want
to.

* A command prompt? All we have is the DVD from HP to reinstall the OS.
If the original DVD with the defective DLL is in the drive, how would I get
the *good* DLL off the "CD-R?" I doubt this PC can access BOTH drives at
the same time. The GOOD DLL is not on the original HP DVD, it's on a CD-R
and was copied from an older PC.
I'm not sure how to use a command prompt since I have no experience with
DOS. Or are you talking about the Start/Run thing?
I'm no techie and my husband is only experienced on W95 and W98SE. He's as
lost on this PC as I am. The helpfiles don't cover most of the problems
I've had with this PC and neither does the Dummies Book. I get completely
lost on the MS site and can waste much time there - and often find an answer
I cannot comprehend because it's too technical. I can honestly see why the
people I know with XP are not real happy with it. One man I know had just
W98SE reinstalled on his PC rather than put up with the constant XP
problems.

I'm sure I can do it here but that's (of course) why I stay with Fat32 so I

* A DOS boot disk for WXP? If I had one and it booted my PC into some kind
of DOS window I would be clueless. In W98SE it takes less than 3 minutes to
install an new DLL. I don't know why MS changed that.
