New Speakers, nothing but hiss....

Went to store and bought a couple new speakers for my Moms PC. Plugged in,
getting nothing but hiss when I try to play an e-card that was sent to her.
Card indicates sound should be coming out, but only hiss. Went to Media
Player, picked a song and it connected the "counter" started :01,:02, :03
..... nothing but hiss.

I'm a novice (probably shows) and I'm lost. Read the stuff about checking
the device, making sure it was "enabled", and it indicates it is funtioning
properly. Can anyone shed some light on my "prob"? Thanks, Dave

It sounds like you have the speakers plugged into the wrong connector.
Look at the back of your Mom's PC again. Is there a separate sound card
as well as one on the motherboard? If so, where did you plug the
speakers? If you have just the one sound card on the motherboard, the
place to plug the speaker connector in is usually color-coded green.
