New Server Upgrade

S

SuperGumby [SBS MVP]

MVP's are not sysops, this group is hosted on MS servers and specifically
you cannot work for MS and be an MVP.

Your original post copied to the SBS group starts with a bad assumption, the
idea that no additional DC is possible in an SBS domain. ALL versions of SBS
have supported additional DC's.

You've been told two strategies to addresss your issue, one free (forklift)
another costing a couple of hundred dollars (SBSMigration.com NOTE: Though
not the major focus of Jeff's process the principles involved can be used
for SBS2000 to SBS2000 on new hardware). A third piece of advice has been
offered, taking the opportunty to move to the much more functional later
version of the software.

To say your responses to this freely given advice which directly addresses
your question has been rather negative would be being kind.

I ended up spending the weekend performing backup, restore, repair, and
then re-apply updates. Time-consuming and I didn't need a loop-back
adapter, but it worked out.

I really do appreciate everyone's input.

Please note that I've never been upset with anyone in this forum. My
frustration is directed at Microsoft. They could do better if they
wanted. The more I work with Windows, the more I like NetWare. So
much easier to work with and manage.

Anyway, thanks again. Got it done.

Les,

Simply demonstrating that it *is* possible to migrate hardware and keep
the same NOS, settings, data, etc.

There may not be technical reasons to migrate to new hardware, but there
certainly are financial reasons.

Microsoft is all about Microsoft and how much money they can make. Yes,
all commercial companies need to turn a profit to keep their doors open,
but seriously, there is a reason for migrating hardware. Not every
company is going to plop down money and be forced to migrate to a newer
version of Windows simply because they get a new server.

Microsoft really needs to get over themselves and think of their
customers once in a while.

Thanks for the tip. Ghost doesn't work on Server OSes and wouldn't
install on Windows 2000 Server (I tried it).

Anyway, as indicated, I've already resolved it using Arcserve, etc.
