New Product Key

I have recently purchased a new xp pro upgrade software for myself, rather
than use my dads older copy. i am trying to change the cd key and i have seen
the microsoft help that tells u how. If i was to follow those commands and it
says "re install windows" will that reset everything on my pc? or will it
just let me change my serial.
