New problem with dupe autonumbers

This is kind of a continuation of my question posted yesterday. I am getting
duplicating autonumbers when I go to add new records. It was recommended to
me that I update the Jet SP (I have WindowsXP). I did this; I used the link
posted in the reply. According to the article, I need the Microsoft Jet
Security Bulletin MS04-014, but according to the version on my pc, it's
already here. According to the windowsupdate.microsoft page, I saw 2 updates
so I clicked to download them. I am not sure if by clicking on Updates, that
they are downloaded AND installed. These two updates happened to be
ExpressInstall and another Install where you can pick & choose which updates
to install. Once I download them, how do I install them? At one point I got
a pop-up message saying that the Update would be a previous version of a more
current Update that is already installed on my pc, so I ignored that. Then I
got a message telling me that the computer should be re-started to install
the updates, so I shut everything down & re-booted. While I was attempting to
get back to this website, the computer froze. Just exactly when and how are
computers supposed to make my job (secretary) easier?

Meanwhile, I'm still getting duplicating autonumbers when adding new
records. I type in the first character in the first field after autonumber,
then go to close the table. I get a message saying the autonumber can't be
duplicated, so I delete that first character; can't delete the dupe
autonumber, so I again go to close the table, get a message telling me my
changes will not be saved. Close it anyway. Then start again to add a new
record. This time, the autonumber has increased by 1, but it's still within
the range of already entered records.

Please help. Should I just go on adding/losing these "fake new records"
until the autonumber "catches up" with "itself"? I need to resolve this
because I have design questions that I don't think can be addressed while I
have this going on **sigh**.

Thanks again, and In Peace, Max

To check whether you do have JET 4 SP8 installed, locate the file
msjet40.dll. Typically it's in Windows\System32. Right-click, and choose
Properties. Look on the Version tab. The minor version number should start
with an 8, i.e.:
4.0.8xxx.0
The "xxx" can vary, but if you don't see the 8, you don't have the service
pack yet. You can explicitly download this from:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/239114
Save it to hard disk. Take note of the where you saved it to. After it
downloads, run the file.

Installing the JET service pack will prevent the problem from recurring, but
it does not fix a file that already has the problem. To do that, run the
code in this article:
Fixing AutoNumbers when Access assigns negatives or duplicates
