New PhotoSmart 7960 Won't Accept Envelopes--"Paper Size Too Small"

I'm trying to print on the back of 8.75x5.75" envelopes. I spent a lot of
time setting up the doc in QuarkXpress 5 and did manage to print some the
other day.

I left the document open because it was so difficult to achieve the right
settings that would allow me to print at all. Today I tried to print that
same document with the same settings, and it just won't do it. It spits out
the envelope and says that the paper size is smaller than the document!

My document is set up as 8.75 x 5.75" in Quark. It previews perfectly in
HP's preview print screen menu. But when I press the print icon, the
envelope loads, then I get the paper size mismatch error.

I have never had a printer that was so hard to print an envelope with!

The disturbing part is that I actually DID get 19 envelopes printed the
other day on this printer with these exact settings. I never shut down Quark
or Windows or the printer since then, anticipating I'd be printing more of
these envelopes. Today I gave the print command, used the same blank
envelopes, but the 7960 just said 'screw you, I don't wanna work today',
essentially.

How can I disable that stupid paper size detection feature so I can print my
job? Obviously the feature is broken and needs to be bypassed. Help!

Alright... this is getting too strange...

I spent almost 100 minutes mucking around with the settings on my 7960. Then
my wife comes in the room to see what's taking me so long and lo and behold,
the very next try, it prints the envelope!!!!

I don't believe in the supernatural, but this is too strange. 76 print
attempts and 75 of 'em result in that paper size mismatch error, despite the
fact that the paper size matches between document and custom HP paper size
that I saved and selected as custom 1.

I don't like software that's THIS flakey! This is more like voodoo than
printing technology. Or perhaps the paper size function just gets out of the
way after 75 print attempts? Is there some sort of fuzzy logic built in that
realizes that I really DO want to print on this paper size and to hell with
what the printer thinks?

The bottom line seems to be that this printer is simply UNRELIABLE when
printing on any stock that requires a CUSTOM paper size that's not listed in
it's default dropdown list. It's absurdly difficult to get an envelope to
print on this printer. I don't understand why any manufacturer would build a
printer in such a way as to cause so much difficulty when doing a basic
function. I've owned a lot of different kinds of printers over the past 20
years and none of them were this difficult to use.

Hi,

Just another input.... when I have odd size envelopes, I use the generic
settings for paper 8.5x11 and lay out the printing on that size - print one
page and overlay with the envelope - adjust the print as needed - test (with
paper) - then test with envelope and print away.. (can merge too if needed )

or fight for the correct match......

Works for me (at times)

I too have resorted to this in some instances, but it is a bad workaround
and eliminates file portability to any other printer.

If a manufacturer says it prints envelopes, then by god it should and
without having to stand on my head and resite verses from Shakespeare.
