new partition over Linux partition

i am trying to delete a partion i created to install Linux. I want to install
Windows, but when the computer boots from the windows installation cd it
wants me to tell it which partition to install on. I choose one (where Linux is
installed) and it tells me that i cannot create it because this partition is not
windows compatible. I did know this, however, what is do not know is how
to change the partition. I delete the partition and it tells me "unpartitioned
space". I create a new partition and it asks for the size, but not the type. It
has me in a loop of creating partitions not Windows compatible. I have read
from other sources on the web to use fdisk through Linux sartup, but I am
getting confused. I am much more familiar with Windows and I was
wondering if anyone knows a simple way to get past this problem.

Thanks for any advice.

I have tried following the instructions on these pages and related pages (as
suggested by previous response). It will not let me go to MS-DOS. When I
am loading Linux there is no command for fdisk. I did a "man" on fdisk and
still have nothing intuitive to go on. The instructions given by microsoft help
pages assume you are able to delete through Linux. I am unable to do so. I
am unable to get to MS-DOS prompt. Where do I go from here?

BTW, thanks for the previous quick response.

use partition magic http://www.powerquest.com/partitionmagic/ to do anything
you want with your disk.

You do it as part of an install of the system after booting the XP CD
direct. Enter Setup, and after the license agreement take New Install.
When it asks you to confirm where, hit ESC; select and delete the
current partition and make a new RAW one to be formatted at the next
stage. This will then make a Windows partition type - the fact that
there ed to be a Linux one in the space is not relevant
