New mail icon no longer comes up in Outlook 2002

It used to be that the new mail icon would appear in the system tray whenever
a new message arrived in Outlook 2002. The icon has stopped appearing. I am
not aware of having changed anything in the configuration. Any ideas on how
to get it back?

Make sure "Show an envelope icon in the system tray" is checked under:

Tools->Options->Preferences Tab->E-mail Options->Advanced E-mail Options

If this is Windows XP, it could be because of your Taskbar properties.
Right-click on the Taskbat and choose Properties. Click Customize. Locate
the "You have new unopened items" icon and change the Behavior to "Always
show". Click OK, check the "Lock the Taskbar" box, and click OK.
