New Installation

Thanks for the reply Carey

It appears not all is happening as you say it should.

When I boot with the cd in it doesn't give me the option to reformat.

When I get the message " Press enter to boot from cd" I press enter.
Setup then goes into loading files, when that's done it says setup is
loading Windows.
I'm then presented with a screen that gives me three options.

1: To setup Windows XP now, press enter
2: To repair a Windows XP installation using recovery console, press R
3: To quit setup without installing Windows XP, press F3

Pressing enter just installs a new copy of XP without reformatting leaving
all my previously installed programs.
I don't doubt that all the tools are there, but how to get it to format.
As I said it's not an upgrade but full version. Actually I have two, one
for each machine, this is getting frustrating.
What's worse is it doesn't have a floppy drive so I can't Fdisk with a
floppy. Maybe if I get into the Bios but how?
Oh I miss the good old days of power users. If it's any help, it's a
Pressario R3000.

Do not start the reinstall of Windows XP from within Windows.

Remove the Windows XP CD from the CD drive, then turn-off
your computer. Then restart your computer, enter the BIOS and
change the drive boot order so that the CD Drive is the first
bootable device and the hard drive is the second bootable device.
Insert the Windows XP CD in the CD drive, save the changes
made to the BIOS and your computer will reboot. When prompted
to boot from the CD, press any key and you should soon see the
options for deleting partitions, creating a new partition, and formatting.

Ooo, a search of www.microsoft.com, the available
documentation on the CD, and a million web sites?

Only kidding. I'm an MVP myself.

Only kidding, as I said. It is often very useful to have a

I am curious, what was confusing about the web site Carey directed you to
that explained exactly what Carey just explained? Did you read the web page?
I am asking to see if I can make it better. Did you see there is even a
printable version of the step by step.

Hello Michael,
It's not that the website was confusing, let me put it this way.
I explained my problem and Carey explained to me in just a few words what I
need to do. His comments were concise and most importantly TO THE POINT,
without all the preamble! I've been to 'How To' links before and I find
looking at these 'How To' pages that the writer/s tend to ramble on quit a
bit, no offence intended. Let me explain it this way...
A person want to know how to fry an egg so he posts the question.

I would answer it this way..
1. light the stove
I would not discuss the benefits of gas vs electric
2. get a frypan, and add a little oil or butter and heat.
3. crack and egg and put it into the frypan and cook.

That's it, TO THE POINT!
I WOULD NOT go into the If, buts and however. I wouldn't go into the if you
use a large frypan and brand names, I wouldn't get into the pro's and cons
of the type of butter/oil to use, I wouldn't discuss cholesterol etc.
The guy just wants to read hot to fry an egg not read a book. Do you get my
point? Speaking for myself, I have a problem and I just want to fix it
without earning a degree.. I had another problem once that I posted, got
directed to a 'How To' link. I downloaded the page and printed it, 2023
words. After culling it with a black marker I was left with a relevant
answer to my problem, just a little more than 200 words.
I could write a 5000 word essay on how to fry an egg but as you see I did it
in three steps.
People like Carey make it easy, others tend to go off in tangents and
complicate matters. I would like to think that others share my opinions.
Basically, if I want the ins and outs, I'll buy a book.

Thanks for the feedback, and yes I see the point and is exactly why the
first line on the page is Click here to skip to "Steps to Clean Install XP"
.. Where in the first two steps your question was answered with little
fluff. For those that need to know more they can read the whole page.

Re your step by step, Oh I see, three pages. Well that makes it about two
and a half pages to long. See the answer I got from Carey? Just a few
lines and problem solved.

Like I said did you even look at the web site before trashing it? I guess
not by your replies.
Carey's first post included links to my web site [ that you are so
digelently trashing ] that IF you would have followed the links, you would
not have even needed to make another reply to Carey saying you didn't get IT
[i.e. the information]. The thing you don't get is Carey was being polite
and made a rare followup reply with information he had already supplied by
posting the links and if you would have looked at the links you would have
not been dissapointed and. would have not had to wade through unnecessary
fluff, plus he even made a mistake in his reply by saying you needed to
remove the XP CD before rebooting. It is not necessary to remove the XP CD
before rebooting and is an important step in doing the clean install.

Now if you would like to really give me some relevent feedback, I would
appreciate it, but if you want to continue to be deaf, dumb and blind,
please don't bother.
