new installation audio problems

I just installed an english Xp operating sys on my laptop which came
originally with Japanese XP (i live in Japan) Although I can choose between
either upon startup, the sounds and volume controls only work while im using
the Japanese XP. While using the English XP the audio tabs are greyed out and
`no device` is written in the boxes - how can i get the volume controls and
the default speakers to operate?

It sounds (pardon the pun <g>) as though you don`t have any sound
drivers\software installed on the english version. The `no device` means the
system can`t find them.
