New Icon on Desktop

Today a new icon appeared on my desktop called
"RegCure Properties". What is this? I went to Google
to check it out and the first thing I see is RegCure2007
"Warning"?
I did not download this and I have not attempted to
try and open it. How do I get rid of it?

Do a thorough check for malware, following all of the steps at one of these
Web pages.

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?
For quite a few people it's by installing Messenger Plus, whose ads for
malware don't identify the malware as such and try to convince you that you
owe it to the author. See also:

Don't ever do a "default" install of anything. Always choose Custom and see
what else is being carried along. Don't install any extras you're not sure
of.

To Frank from slick1
My Spybot, Windows Defender or AVG did not pick-up anything on this.
Will check-out all the sites you have provided. Thanks.
The only thing I have installed in the last 2 weeks has been a
Desktop Assistant, Version 1.6.173.0 from Sphinx Software. The
site "seemed" safe to me, but exactly how is one to know?

When it gives you a choice of Normal or Custom you choose Custom.
