new hd shuts down system

new 40gb wd hdd have set jumpers, is unformated put into pc turn on and pc shuts down totally
System is duron 1.2ghz, 256 ram, have flashed bios, msi k7t266 mobo, old hd 7gig same maker boots up no problem
New drive will not allow video to show

Help!!

Try installing the new drive on the Secondary IDE channel on the
Motherboard as master. You may have
to disconnect the Cdrom drive(s) temporarily. See if it boots Ok.
