I just got a new harddrive and i had this problem when i first got the
computer. I keep getting these pops ups that says it is from my computer to
me, and that i have a bunch of spyware programs on my computer and it gives
me a link to go to so that i can get rid of them, but the link always leads
me to something they want me to pay for. how do i get rid of these pop up
messages?

Sounds like that might be from Windows Messenger. You can disable it through
Services. Start/Settings/Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Services
Disable Messenger

That is just spam to scare you into buying their software.

Try AVG free antivirus at www.grisoft.com
Spybot S&D at http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html

These 2 will do a good job protecting your pc.

That message is probably from some sort of spyware trojan that is on
your computer. Often they direct you to these ripoff spyware removal
sites.

Start by doing a free online spyware check of your computer using MVP
Jim Eshelman's web page at http://aumha.org/a/noads.htm

If that finds anything (and it probably will from what you have
described) then use Jim's Spyware Quick Fix Procedure at
http://www.aumha.org/a/quickfix.htm to clean it up.

Have you installed the SP2 update for Windows XP?

If yes go to Internet Explorer, Tools, Popup Blocker and see if it ON or
OFF?
