New Hard Drive New problems

I have installed a seagate 80gb harddrive. My old WD 80gb is still on my
system. i copied the complete WD onto the seagate without a problem. So I now
use the seagate as a master and the WD as slave. I deleted everything on the
WD when I reformated it. Since then my System Restore will not work and it
looks like the Window Installer is also missing (even thought I have
downloaded a 3.0 and 3.1 from Microsoft).
My question is can I do a fresh Installation on my old harddrive (WD) and
reboot windows from that? And then can I take all the drivers and patches
from my new (Seagate) harddrive?
What I am wondering is basically can I do a complete restoreration on one
drive and use the info from the other harddrive without having to back up my
system on a blank DVD?
Forgot to mentiom my system

you used the transfer software to "clone" your new drive ?

then try a repair install first (note : you will have to reapply updates
afterwards)

You have a lot of options, here, as there are more ways than one to skin
this cat. It sort of up to you.

In my opinion, if the system is working now, you would move your documents
and data [ music etc.] to a folder(s) on the old drive (use the Files and
Settings Transfer Wizard too if you like the idea of that).

Then shutdown and arrange the hardware with the new drive as master. Install
Windows and programs onto the new drive. Then do whatever you want with the
data and settings on the old drive including running the Files and Settings
Transfer Wizard. You might consider moving all your own stuff off the old
onto to the new, reformatting the old, then moving it back to the old, using
it as a "data" drive.

But there certainly other ways to go about this for sure!

How was this done?

Did you use a utility to "clone" the old hard drive to the new one (like
Norton Ghost???)

Yes, Seagate had software that cloned it.

lindsaypace:
First of all, NEVER EVER provide your email address in a newsgroup posting
as you previously did. At best, the "spam harvesters" have already added
your address to their database and you can expect to receive a continuing
wave of spam messages. At worst, there are a lot of sickos out there who
like nothing better than to engage in their weird & disgusting
"communications" with their prey. And if they detect or think you're female
you're particularly vulnerable to this misery.

And take my further advice not to engage in any email correspondence with
someone who has responded to your query and has indicated a desire to help
you with your problem through private emails. Unless you have *absolute*
assurance the person(s) have only a genuine desire to help you with your
specific problem, has *nothing* more on their mind, and you feel that's the
only practical method to solve your problem, do not engage in this activity.
Frankly, there's no practical way of separating the wheat from the scum, so
take my advice and do not engage in private correspondence where you're
divulging personal information of one sort or another, including your email
address. There's no reason why you can't pose your problem here in this
newsgroup or similar ones, do so anonymously, and (hopefully) receive
responses that will help you with your problem.

Now, as to your problem...

From your description of your problem it seems that the only problems you've
encountered after cloning your old HD to this new one is that something is
amiss with System Restore and the Windows Installer. At least you don't
indicate any further problems with the newly cloned drive. So I assume it
boots without incident and is completely functional with the exception of
those two problems. Do I have this right?

If that is so, perhaps the simplest solution is to do a Repair install on
your newly-cloned HD. I assume you don't know how to do this so do a Google
search on "XP repair install" and you'll be pointed to a number of sites
that contain detailed step-by-step instructions how to perform this
operation. It's comparatively straightforward and relatively simple to
undertake a Repair install and it shouldn't give you any problems.
But it is a major operation and as such, it would be wise if you would
backup any of your important data files just in case things go awry. This is
always a prudent thing to do.

BTW, the next time you have occasion to clone a HD, don't immediately delete
the contents on your source disk until you've had an opportunity to ensure
that the clone "took" and all is well on the destination drive. Only then
should you delete files or , reformat the source HD.

I tried the repair install, some files would not install from my XP cd. It
would ask me to locate the file (example: i386, HMMAPI.DL, DHTMLED.OC,
TRIEDIT.OC,SetupSO.ex, and about 10 more)
I did follow your instructions and did not select "load recover console" and
it did find the previous xp installation. Afterward, I tried to go to updates
and it will not fully load SP2 Iget error 0x80070402
(yes that is that right error code)
