New Flat Panel, do i need a new video Card?

B

Brandon

I just recently purchased a planar 190M 19 inch flat panel monitor.
It is connected ( analog)at the moment to a 32MB ATI Radeon VE video card.
My questions are these...
Will hooking up the DVI cable as well improve the quality of the display?
Will changing the video card to something more powerful improve the quality?
I am not overly impressed so far with the quality I am getting.
I have optimized everything in the current set-up as well as I could(smooth
screen fonts etc) so I am wondering what else I could do.
Thanks
Brandon

whazza point of getting a state of the art 19 inch flat panel and
connecting it to a piece o junk. its like getting a ferrari and
sticking on bicycle wheels.

Get yo ass to a store and purchase at the very least an ATI Radeon
9200SE (DVI) 128mb. If you are more upscale & shit, go for higher
model Radeons.

Another good bet is the GeForce4 MX440-8X TD. If you are more
upscale, an FX 5200 or even a Ti 4200.

What are you waiting for? Hit the road screeching now!!!!!!

Flat panel monitors do look better if driven by its DVI input.

Also, Flat panel monitors each have their own 'native' resolution at which,
they look their best.

Typically for 17" flat panel monitors, the native resolution is 1024x758
for 19" flat panel monitors, it's usually 1280x1024
for 20" flat panel monitors, it's usually 1600x1200

Hook that monitor up via DVI and set it to 1280x1024 with probably a 60Hz
refresh rate and see for yourself.

I just paid $100 for a Matrox Millennium G550 32MB (OEM) for my 19" flat
panel and am very happy with it. It comes with a dual head, VGA and DVI.
I'm using the DVI. It's very nice. I had a Voodoo 5 5500 64MB card which
worked great with my old monitor. However, I'm not a gamer, I only need 2D
from the Matrox.

....and a radeon 9200 is going to improve 2D video quality how, exactly?
it's like getting a Bentley and putting neon lights underneath it.

in response to original poster, a DVI cable will give a *marginal* increase
in clarity. if you're not bothered about 3d speed, your card is perfectly
adequate though.
