New emails coming in as read

Has anyone ever seen new emails come in as read? There are no rules turned
on. The Reading Pane, AutoPreview and Desktop Alert are not being used. It
doesn't happen to every single message. Messages can be from internal or
external recipients.

This can happen if you sync with a handheld device.

I forgot to mention that I checked that too. He doesn't use a handheld device.

It can also happen if you scan incoming messages with an antivirus or -spam
scanner. Start Outlook once in safe mode (hold Ctrl when starting Outlook)
and see if something changes.
