New DVD drive install

Geoff A.

I've just removed my old CD rewritable drive & relaced it with a new DVD
rewritable drive. But when I boot up, I get an error message:
"sec slave drive
ATAPI incompatible"
When the PC comes on to desktop, the drive opens and shuts when the button
is pressed, but isn't recognised on My Computer.
I'm expert at this (or I wouldn't be asking!), but all I did was to replace
the 2 connections from the old drive and plug them into the new one. Have I
done something wrong somewhere?
Thanks.

The first thin I would check would be that the slave/master jumper settings
are correct on both the new drive you've installed and the other drive that
is attached to the IDE cable (If you are running the two devices off the same
cable.)

Preferably if you can I would seperate them and have your hard drive on on
channel and the DVD Writer on the 2nd

Sorry, on my last post I meant to say that I'm NO expert at this! Therefore
you lost me after "The first thing I would check..."
I'd be really grateful for a layman's walkthrough.
Thanks.

Also, when I find the new hardware, I get the message "This device cannot
start. Code 10"
Hopefully this means something to someone!

OK Geoff I'll try and put it basic for you.

The IDE cable that connects your drives to the motherboard has two 3
connectors. one goes to the motherboard and the other two can go to the
drives. The first connector after the motherboard is the slave connector and
the last connector at the end is the master connector. To connect a slave
drive to the slave connector you must configure the drive to perform as a
slave. Have a look for a picture on the drive itself and it should tell you
how to configure the array of pins at the back of the drive to make it a
slave drive. To use it as a master i.e to connect the drive to the last
connector on the cable you will need to configure it as a master drive.

Hope this helps

Thanks Nick & Gareth,
How easy was that?! It often amazes me how something so easy can be made to
sound so hard to non-experts. Thanks very much- it's appreciated!
