I've had some new directories pop up in my c:\ root directory and I just
don't want to erase them I would like to know what they are. One is called
user the other is called recycler. My computer has been acting up resetting
itself. The screen recommended last known good config or something like that
and that didn't help.

C:\RECYCLER is recycle bin for ntfs hdd.

USER I dont know or have but if u r having problems booting
XP I wouldn't go deleting anything. Do u have any saved
Registries?

Any advise given is my attempt to show appreciation for all
the excellent help I've received here but I'm no MVP so it
may only apply NUGS (Normally, Usually, Generally, Sometimes :)

You must have enabled Hidden files and folders in Folder Options

Each hard disk or partition contains a hidden folder named Recycler. The
Recycler folder is used only on NTFS partitions. The Recycler folder
contains a Recycle Bin for each user that logs on to the computer, sorted by
their security identifier (SID).

I have no idea what C:\user folder could be.

What's in it?

When was it created? Right click it and select Properties.

Hope this helps. Let us know.

Others have addressed your inquiry about Recycler and User. With
respect to the rest, what specifically do you mean by "My computer has
been acting up and resetting itself"? Also, what do you mean by last
known good configuration didn't help? Help with what. What did you
expect it to do? You need to be specific, folks here aren't mind readers.
