Just bought this new scanner and having major problems already. The
scanner indicator is always blinking. Everytime I press the Scan
button and the software loads up it takes forever to setup and it never
finishes. I get some various error msgs including:

Error = 1
Unknown Error.
Confirm all other DiMAGE software is closed
----------------------------
Timeout trying to setup (or something like that)
----------------------------

Everytime I press the OK button on the error window the program freezes
and I have to go into Task Manager to close it.

Running WinXP Media Center. I also have PS CS2 and Elements in case you
guys need this information.

Please advise. I'm tempted to return this machine after spending 3
hours on it.

TIA

1. If it's like version 1 you need to run the software to stop the
scanner light blinking.

2. Have you got any other USB scanners attached?

I would run the software and it would try "setting up" and then
generate the error.

Sounds to me that you may have USB problems.
Minolta scanners are sensitive to USB glitches. Bad cables can cause the
unknown error=1. What you describe is the scanner is not getting a error
free signal from USB.

Do you have the latest software for your scanner from Minolta? Current
version is 1.1.5.

And it may also help to make sure if the setup instructions were
followed to the letter. For the DSE-5400 (first model) the setup
instructions stated that the scanner has to be *disconnected* until
after the installation of the DiMAGE Scan Utility software.
Don't know if it's the same with the model II.

IIRC from my Scan Dual and 5400 installs, the Minotla s/w has to be
installed (and possibly machine rebooted) before you connect the scanner
USB.

So, 1) unistall the Minolta s/w, disconnect the USB,
2) install the Miolta s/w, Reboot, THEN connect the USB.

Cheers,
Alan.

I returned the scanner and will be getting a new one. Just to start
fresh again I'm wandering if I should uninstall the driver and the
software first? I'm thinking I should do this because I'll be
downloading the newest software from their site.

At there site, there is no selection for DImage Elite 5400 II just
DImage Elite 5400. Should I select this to get the software upgrade?

Thanks all for the response.

Disconnect the scanner (or don't connect the replacement)
Deinstall the s/w
Reboot.
Install the s/w
Reboot, connect the USB
Try again // should work fine

I would think not. If there is no s/w specific to the 5400 II, then
don't use it. Just follow the instructions above. Should be fine.

I've managed to install the software and the drivers successfully.
However, using their software I could get a prescan (most of the time).
When I select a thumbnail to scan it would start scanning and stop
about 90% into the scan. I noticed that the LED light was off.

I thought the file size was too big so I tried a 8MB scan and still the
same problem.
Thinking that my Virtual Memory is too low I increased it to 1.5 GB and
still got the same problem. Has anyone had this experience?

Sounds like you may have a USB driver flaking out on you.

If you have not updated Windows XP, then go to Windows Update and install
SP2.
If you are not using Windows XP, then get the latest Motherboard USB driver
update from the Motherboard manufacturer. Windows 98 and the Minolta film
scanners are unstable.

If a Mac, I have no clue.

The Minolta scanners are sensitive to USB errors of any kind, even those
that do not show.

This is my experience with the ScanDual IV, a lower cost sister to the 5400.
