New cPanel & Direct Admin won't support FPSE

I tried to publish yesterday from FP 2003 and the site would not publish. I
called both of my Web Hosting providers and was told that all new (ready to
be installed)and some current versions of their server software would no
longer support the FP Extensions. (cPanel and Direct Admin)

They said that if any host still has them, they won't when they upgrade
(their server software.) They said that since FP is no longer supported by
MS, that the licensing for the FPSE was revoked by Microsoft.

I googled this and sure enough, there is much info attesting to this on the
Web.

Do the MVPs have any info on this? Is it true?

Someone on the boards said that directly FTP-ing would break the site. Is
that true?

Does anyone have a list of what will not work in a site when you directly FTP?

If you don't use any of those things, can you continue to directly FTP?

Obviously, I am not a programmer. (I have Expression Web, but was
completely blown away trying to make a simple form.) I don't like EW at all;
the GUI is awful for novices and semi-novices.

I would appreciate any info, as I dread redoing all my sites in EW.

Thank you so much....and a million boo hoos.

The FrontPage Server Extensions for Non-Windows platforms have been discontinued and are not supported
- But are still available for Windows server platforms including Windows 2003 (and optionally for Window 2008)

If you still want to use the FP SE, switch to a Window Server host

I can't be sure, but from my experience, hosting companies will justify a
change to discontinuing lack of support for FrontPage Extensions any way they
want to.

I had the same problem and found there are many hosting companies that plan
to support FPE indefinitely because many people don't want to learn to write
code to do their websites.... ie, the demand for FPE is strong.

I'd research another hosting company.
And, for what it's worth, here's what's posted on the cPanel website under
FAQs:
" Question: Is cPanel continuing to support FrontPage Extensions? How about
on Apache 2? Answer: Yes, cPanel will continue to support FrontPage
Extensions for the foreseeable future. Additionally, FrontPage Extensions
are supported on Apache 1.3, 2 and 2.2."

I hope this helps!

.._..

I just installed the latest version of cPanel on a server and it has FPSE
install icon in it.

They don't want to support it, probably because they lack the expertise, or
they perceive the customers using it as being high maintainence (which is
probably true).

There have not been new versions for Unix/Apache in a long long time, so now
is a good a time as any to start weening yourself from the extensions.

We have our intranet in a FrontPage Discussion web and have invested the
time to write about 1300 articles over the years. This intranet has now
become an absolutely mission-critical resource. Not to sound like an
ingrate, but it would be nice if Microsoft would provide a migration path
rahter than pullng FPSE liscenses from non-Microsoft servers and blithely
suggesting that we "start weening ourselves off FrontPage."
