New computer, baffling problem

H

Heather

Hi all....

Tech who built this is away, but it is baffling him also. It seems to only
happen when playing Pogo, but I am not often on *high graphic sites*.

ASUS motherboard, P5P800S which has the sound card as part of it, I believe.
512 ram, and so on.

Problem.....I get distorted images, screen won't load, sound disappears and
that is on both IE and Firefox. Doesn't happen all the time and seems to be
a bit better on IE. I don't seem to be the only one having problems with
that website. And yes, I have Sun Java 1.5.xxx on here. Did the same with
1.4.2_09 as well.

However, I would say it happens close to 50% of the time and I have no clue
as to why. I am using my older Samtron monitor and the resolution is low
(800x600?).....Roxio 7 won't display unless I change it to a higher one.

So....is it the monitor re the imaging? But that won't account for the
sound shutting down. If I shut the browser or go to a different website,
the sound reappears.

Forgot to mention that two days ago, IE totally crashed and I got an error
log on the desktop.......all to do with Java. That was with the older
version.

Any thoughts??

Perhaps......but I have played on it for 4 years with my WinME computer with
no problem. Could be the new Java, could be a glitch in my video card, not
sure.

Thanks....Heather (Ontario)

Heather, Now mind yo this is Only a Guess. But seeing how your graphics card
is built in, and the prob. sparatic,
have you looking at your FW or AV s/w? I have an HP Pc and for some reason
when I went from a 17" to a 19" monitor
2 of the pre packaged games started causing the monitor to *blank out*.

My 1st thought was a bad monitor. After they swapped it out 2 more times we
deduced it was not the monitor.
Next thought was a flakey video card. Now they never did send me the proper
card, they tried 6x, I read an article
saying how Norton Util sometimes causes problems. I have Norton Inet Sec.
2005.

So I figure rather than send the pc out to hp I'd ask Symantec. They sent me
a couple of links to pages w/diff. things to try.
Well my prob. went away after the 2nd article.

As I said it's just a thought. Good luck.

Hmmm, funny you should mention the AV. Being an ex-WinME user, I have never
used Norton, btw....it crashes WinME. But I have used EZ Trust for 5 years.
Just lately (but on WinME also), EZ has been acting up and won't update
properly. I am about to uninstall it (I have reinstalled it 3 or 4 times),
and will try Avast!

On the Aumha Forum, one of the fellows suggested it was just this old
monitor and speakers. Could well be. As could your suggestion.

Thanks for taking the time to answer....I will let you know when I get it
sorted out. I do use Zone Alarm Pro, but no problems with that.....touch
wood. (G)

Cheers.......Heather

Sometimes I can't see the forest for the trees, grin. Never once thought
about updating the Monitor Drivers!!

Anyway.....long story short, this monitor does NOT have drivers for XP, so
guess I will be springing for a new flat panel one, once my tech guy gets
back.

It was one of the guys on Jim Eshelman's Forum who put me on the right
track......

Cheers....Figgs

There are tens of thousands of people running Norton on WinME. You should
be careful in assuming your own situation is normal.

Norton does not "crash" a healthy install of any Windows OS from Windows 98
and above.

Just because your install of Windows ME has issues, does not mean that
*every* install of WinME has trouble.

Dear Bobby.....

I would suggest that you go to any of the WinME news groups and make that
same statement. WinME and Norton do NOT get along....period!! Also make
this assertion on alt.comp.anti-virus.....I will be watching, lol.

*Crashing* was not the right word......but *screwing up* your system is more
apropros. Bloatware comes to mind as well.

Go ask Noel Paton or Mike Maltby what they think of Norton........on or off
WinME. And then come back here and tell me what they said, (eg)

Heather;

It does not matter what they say...I know of several dozen computers running
WinME and Norton flawlessly. Poor troubleshooting skills, flakey installs
of the OS, and other issues are common, and are often erroneously attributed
to Norton. Removing Norton removes the immediate symptom, but not the
underlying cause. You have your agenda (however misguided it may be).

I am not so sure about that, if your monitor supports at least 1024*768
or better you should not have a problem. Easy to check, just crank it up
in settings and see what happens. As far as I know I have no drivers for
my generic monitor and it works on three OSes perfectly.
Also monitors do not usually affect sound. If you have an all in one MB
you may want to increase the memory allocated to the video section of
the MB.
Totally agree on Norton, watch out for any software that comes bundled
with new OEM machines AND Motherboards.

You just shot yourself in the foot there!
_*\"Removing_Norton_removes_the_immediate_symptom\"*_
No well behaved software will show up so called "SYMPTOMS" that never
existed befor it was installed!
Ever tried getting rid of Norton completely once installed? Unlike
ordinary software it needs special tools to do it. (You can get them
from WHERE? Norton of course!)

H

Heather

So...you think that I don't know dick-all about WinME. And you also think
that the two top MVP's for WinME don't know what they are talking about
either. You couldn't be more wrong!!

So thanks, but no thanks.....I will continue with my *misguided agenda* and
listen to those that know what they are talking about. You failed that
test, btw!! <g>

Heather

H

Heather

Thanks for the information. At least YOU know what you are talking about!!
(VBG)

The resolution is set at 800 x 600. There are no drivers for XP. Roxio 7
will not work unless I crank it up to 1024 x 768 and then everything is
micro-sized. But I will talk to Willy on this. And increasing the memory
as you say.

It would be nice to be able to use this monitor, but those flat panel ones
are looking mighty nice, lol. My husband just told me last night that he
had been planning to buy me one for my Xmas present. And he doesn't even
know how to turn a computer on, btw.

This is an MS full version of XP home. I had it here and Willy installed
it. No more OEM for moi. And Norton still sux. (G) But there are a lot
of brainwashed people out there who think it is great. OTOH, they probably
need one like that. Safe Hex is the answer, frankly.

Cheers....and nice meeting up with you......Heather (aka Figgs)

Eh?

It's nice - sorta - that Roxanne answered Heather.

If there is no PHYSICAL sound device (place to plug in speakers) - then
yes - you need to have someone install a sound card - or get an external
sound device (USB possibly.)

Otherwise - you likely just need to install the correct drivers from the
manufacturers web page for the make/model of your installed sound device so
that Windows XP can "speak to it in its own language" and thus - output
sounds.

A sound card is a physical piece of hardware. You can't download a sound
card any more than you could download a keyboard or a mouse.
